D 1. i!T FRIDAY, JANUARY NO. 7 26, 1934 IS CQNFERENC ! STAKE VANGUARD WORK TO BE EMPHASIZED BOYS HE lid Timpanogos Ward Members TO Ward Leaders Urged to Attend Union Meeting Sunday Sharon M. I. A. officials, for the moment, are conducting an intensive campaign in the interests of the Vanguards of the Stake. From the hoys themselves In the various wards has come a demand that they have organisation ; which would entitle them to class work and athletic privileges. In other words, there is not proper attention paid to thdsc matters at the present time. Some Class Leaders are slack in their duties. They come unprepared to give the boys the proper advantages which rightly belong to them under the organization. Ward M. I. A. superintendents are urged to consider this matter immediately in order that the Vanguards in their wards may have character-buildin- g classwork, and decent recreational and athletic privileges. Special Meeting January 28 Ward superintendents are also requested to make it their special mission this month to have their Vanguard leaders present at Union meeting next Sunday. If they do not have a Vanguard leader in their ward, they should select orie immediately. If the present leader is not giving satisfaction they should urge upon him the necessity for action and have him present at union meeting Sunday afternoon. What glorious possibilities await our boys of Vanguard age I The General Board have negotiated a splendid course of study and an athletic program equal to that of the M Men. Lets cooperatively makejt our business to see that tljey are not disappointed whert they Tome to mutual next Tuesday evening. First of all, lets make a survey of our wards. List every boy of Vanguard age. Personally invite him to came, and then make sure that you have something for him when he does. Last year Vanguard work in our stake was sadly neglected. This year we do not propose that it shall be. Lets have every guard leader in the stake go on a Vanmis- sion to his own ward to obtain 100 per cent of the boys of Vanguard age. No greater"joy could come to such a leader than to see that he holds the confidence of his boys. Yes, hell have the unqualified support of his' Bishop, the parents and the general stake authorities too. It seems almost traditional for Vanguard work to fail in our midst. Right now is the time to break such establish tradition. This work can and must go forward! When we have made up our minds to do a thm.g, ' ' half done. The program began January 15 and will continue throughout the present school year. Mr. Ernest Clayton is directly in charge of the project and is being ably assisted by Mr. Carol Farley and Mr. Arnold Skinner, graduate students, as operators. Since visual aids are now recognized such a vital tool in the educative process, a program such as the one now going forward is of great value. The films are all educational in character and are selected to fit into the class schedules with no waste of time on the part of the students or teachers. President Harris Speaks During the morning session, President Franklin S. Harris of the Brigham Young university, was one of the principal speakers. , He urged that we recognize principle rather than personality in the Church administration, saying that altogether too many people are embittered and lead away from the church by the actions of some who are in authority. Men are human and have human weakne. ses, the speaker said, but God has to use humans to accomplish his work. It is far better that we recognize the underlying principles of the Gospel, above the inconsistencies of some who administer church affairs." Other speakers at the conference were Sister Widtsoe, President Blake, President Bigler; and three returned missionaries, Erma Stubbs of Edgemont, Willard Olsen of Lake View, and Reed Burgner of Pleasant View who made reports of their missions. Brother Widtsoe, in response to request, made a report on the condition of the European mission over which he has presided for more than six years.
