Uintah defeated Union by Expre$s Sport Editor The Uintah Utes survived turnover madness, Saturday night and emerged with a 0 record on a 56 to 47 win over the Union High School Cougar hoopsters in Vernal. Uintah will battle Mountain Crest, Friday on the road and will have an away contest against Grand Junction, Tuesday. The next home game for the Utes will be against Green River, Wyoming, I'ecember 20. 2-- Hoop action started early in the Ute boys varsity game as Union was whistled for a technical foul due to e hanging on the rim during warmups. The Utes failed to convert the foul shot, but Kyle White scored two for the Uintah team to go ahead pre-gam- 0 Once again the basketball game was greeted with technical fouls by the referees. The calls were whistled on both coaches as they should have been sitting instead of standing. A new rule only allows the coaches to stand during a timeout and they have to sit on the bench the rest of the limp Mike Olsen struck for two free throws to tie up the game at and then Uintah gained its turn at the foul line, which resulted in two successful tosses by Jeff Palmer for a lead. Todd Mulville popped in two shots for a Uintah lead of Union came roaring right back w ith field goals by Brent Jarrett and Ran Eldredge to cut Uintahs lead to two points at Centers for both teams cashed in at the hoop as Brett Weldon and Jarrett each scored baskets to make the score at the end of the first quarter, 10 to 8 in favor of Uintah. The Cougars settled down and got their basketball act together as Olsen and Jarrett burned the nets for two points each to make the score 35 to 32 in favor of Uintah after three 20-1- 7. 20-2- 0 and White added a field goal for Uintahs biggest lead in the game at 11 Union scored a basket points, in the final seconds to lose by nine points. 56-4- Weldon led Uintah in scoring at 16 points. Lee Schulz led the Uintah Utes with 17 points. He fired in four field goals and hit 9 out of 11 free throws. Theron Murphy added 12 points. He fired in 55-4- 30-1- 42-3- five field goals and hit 2 out of 4 free throws. Steve Nawahine scored ten points. He fired in four field goals and hit 2 out of 4 free throws. Eric Morrow added eight points and Devin Southam scored four points. Colt Mortenson and Derrick Tollefson added two points. Uintahs sophomores whipped Union, 7447. The Utes had a 1 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 0 after two quarters. Tollefson and Brian Oscarson led Uintah with 12 points. Larence Searle scored 11. Both teams encountered early hoop failures, but Anderson connected on two free throws and Lee Schulz popped in two for a five point lead of Rodney Mezenen and Jarrett scored for Union, but Weldon scored four points while being surrounded by three Union defenders. A field goal under pressure by Weldon returned a seven point lead of 8 to the Utes. Uintah and Union traded free throws and field goals, but the Utes scored eight of the final 12 points to win the game by the score of 56 to 47. Free throws by Anderson gave Uintah a 3 lead and Schulz connected on a crowd pleasing alley-oo- p shot, which was set up on a pass from lead.
