Vomal midis wear afi 7 The Vernal Junior High Panthers pocketed another perfect season with a 34 to 6 triumph over the Duchesne Eagles, Wednesday in Vernal. Uintah High Schools varsity team has won a number of games this year after two years of zero wins and have held their own against football powers, Timpview, Pleasant Grove and Provo. The Provo Bulldogs dont have their usual tough team of the past this year, but they were good enough to beat the Utes this season. Uintah gave them a battle all the way, but just fell short of their winning goal. The Ute varsity team has had its wins and disappointing losses this year, but one football team hasnt had any losses to be disappointed about as they won all their football mark. The games for a perfect team without any disappointing 7-- 0 losses is the Vernal Junior High Panthers. Vernal Junior High beat Roosevelt, 34-54-Duchesne, 30-22-36-18-The and West, Craig, Panthers shutout four of their opponents and had two games where only one touchdown was scored. Vernal had only one game where a team scored two touchdowns. Most of the scores came when Vernal had its second string in the game. The Panthers scored 228 points in seven games and their opponents totalled 32 points. Vernal averaged 32 points a game and opponents had an average of 4 5 points. and West Roosevelt, Craig, Duchesne have some fine players, but they arent in the same league talentwise and toughnesswise as teams from Timpview, Provo, Pleasant Grove, Springville, Payson, Spanish Fork and Carbon. Next year these Vernal 9th graders as Uintah will face former sophomores Roosevelt-Wes- t players at Union High School, but they will receive a tougher test when they take on Utah County teams and players from Carbon County. Even still a record is something to be proud of and seven wins are better than a bunch of losses. The 0 mark at the Vernal Junior High means something better in the football future at Uintah High School. Wild Game 34-1- 7-- 0 7-- The Toronto Bluejays competed in a wild American League playoff game, Wednesday afternoon. Kansas City jumped out to a 0 lead on a home run by Willie Wilson, but with the help of errors by the Royals Toronto rallied back for a 3 tie. Toronto gained a 3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the game was tied once again at 4 when Pat Sheridan led off in the top of the ninth with a Kansas City home run. The Bluejays gained a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth in 2-- 4-- 4-- TIMEKEEPER, game as well. , r JH, 4 Curg Belcher keeps an eye on the clock and the 6-- ning, but they were unable to get the winning run in and they were forced into an extra inning. It appeared that Lloyd Moseby made a shoestring catch for the third out in the top of the final inning, but an umpire ruled he trapped the ball and Kansas City scored a go ahead run for a 4 lead. Toronto took its turn at bat and the first batter reached first base when the Kansas City shortstop couldnt get the ball out of his mitt. Moseby ripped out a single and scored the game tying run at Moseby advanced to second base when the Royals first baseman couldnt come up with the ball on a pickoff attempt. There were two outs and two strikes, but A1 Oliver drilled a single into right field and Moseby beat the throw to the plate for the run at winning game two-poi- 5-- nt two-poi- Panther defensive players Randy Allred and Roy Goodrich sacked Duchesne quarterback Jerry Sanchez at the Duchesne 35 yard line. A Vernal Panther broke up a pass and Teo and Allred decked a Duchesne tried to gain a first down on a fourth down play, but they failed and Vernal took over the ball at the 35 yard line. Troy Murray scored the two-poiconversion on a pass for a 28-- Vernal Panther halftime lead. 5-- runn-ingbac- k. 6-- Royal Utes, Cougars Local college football fans are enjoying winning football at the University of Utah, Brigham Young University and Weber State College this season as the three teams have com12-- 2 bined for a mark. nt Vernal advanced the ball to the one yard line and then Weeks ripped up the middle one yard for a touchdown, which gave the Panthers a 34-- 0 lead. Weeks ended up a few inches short of converthe goal line on the two-poi- sion attempt. The Eagles returned the kickoff to the 30 and a face mask penalty advanced them to the Duchesne 45 yard line. A ten yard run by Steve Demille put the Eagles in Vernal territory at the 45. Duchesne gained a first down at the Vernal 41 early in the fourth quarter, but couldnt get another one and Vernal regained the football at its 43. The Panthers gained the ball at their own 49 and John Sadlier carried the ball to the 50. A running play by Ryan Weeks placed the Panthers at the Duchesne 43. However, the Panther drive was stopped and the ball was booted away. The Panthers gained a good punt and Duchesne took over the football at their ten yard line. A penalty pushed the Eagles back to the five, but Vernal recovered a Duchesne fumble at the three yard line. The University of Utah is 0 due to wins over Boise State, Hawaii, Washington State, UTEP and Wyoming. BYU is 1 and has defeated Boston College, Washington, Colorado State and Temple. The only Cougar setback was a last second loss to UCLA. Weber State has defeated Southern Utah State College, Montana State and Portland State. The only Wildcat setback was to Eastern Washington. While driving through Provo I saw a sign located next to Provo High School which had printed on it, The Provo team What is a Don? was scheduled to play the Spanish Fork Dons and I figured the Provo crew might be overconfident, but I guess it didnt matter as they slaughtered Spanish Fork, 41-5-- 4-- line. A penalty booted Duchesne back to the 14, but Demille motored with the ball to the eight. The Eagles gained their first points in the game when Sanchez fired an eight yard pass to wide open Tim Mutton in the end zone for a touchdown feast with about two minutes left in game. Vernal inconversion tercepted a pass and the final score was Vernal, 34 and Duchesne, 6.
