Are you ready for some stirring changes inside your home? From classical to contemporary, discover the impact that the art of faux finishing can bring to your living environment. There are a myriad of techniques for creating visually exciting paint finishes for walls, doors, cabinets and furniture. All you need to get started is a little inspiration and some expert coaching. Until recently, faux finishing was viewed as an intricate process to be left in the hands of professionals. However, with todays superb paint qualities, with a little guidance, youll be amazed at what you can bring to life in your own home in some of the simplest ways. Popular Finishes Some of the more popular faux finishes today are found in rag rolling, sponging suede impressions, and linen. Rag Rolling: Using two colors of paint, there are two prescribed ways to achieve rag rolling; adding and subtracting. With adding, your base coat will be the most prevalent tone. Typically, dark and light versions of the same color are used. The technique requires soaking a clean cotton rag in your glaze (top color) and simply rolling it up or down the wall, adding color to the dry undercoat as you roll. Subtracting is just the opposite process. After applying the glaze, and while it is still wet, roll a clean, dry cotton rag up and down the subwall subtracting small amounts of this top coating. In large-are- a tracting, it would be helpful to work with a partner so that the glaze doesnt diy too quickly, making the removal difficult Sponging: While this process is similar to rag rolling (adding and subtracting ), sponging offers quite a different look. Instead of rolling, youre dabbing or stippling with the sponge. Using a natural sea sponge will give you the largest variety of texture, and youll need more than one for the project. Also, be sure to utilize all of its sides so that a pattern doesnt develop. keep a clean rag handy in case the Tip: While sponge-addinapplied paint becomes too thick in some places. If this occurs, while the glaze is still wet, simply dab it gently with the rag. Suede: This unique and charming faux style has a very soft two-toappearance. The project can be a little time consuming, but will add a great deal of class to any room. The renowned Ralph Lauren brand has developed one of the finest and easiest-to-appsuede paints on the market (Youll find it locally at Jones Paint & Glass) Steps: Pick your suede color (only one paint is needed for this technique) and simply roll on the first coat. Once that coat is dry, using the same paint and a 3 nylonpolyester trim brush, randomly paint look. This d X patterns over the wall, creating a brushed, finish looks great in earth tone colors like beige and sage green. Linen: In the right room setting, linen finish is breathtaking and distinct with its checked weave and comfortable textured look. This, two-co- at r, also, is a process, and is best accomplished by section time. Simply tape off an area and roll wall the at a a working on a translucent beaded glaze in the color you desire over the previously applied foundation tone. While the glaze is still wet, using a linen weaver brush, work the brush through the glaze both horizontally and vertically. Once it has dried, typically 4 hours, move on to the next section and repeat the process until complete. With any faux finish, we suggest practicing the technique on a piece of cardboard or sheetrock prior to tackling your room. This will build confidence and let you evaluate the look you have chosen. Also, before stepping into the world of faux, we encourage getting advice from a specialist in paint selection and application. See Jones ).
