Guest What is developmental kindergarten and why should I consider having my child attend it before kindergarten? A: Just because all children 5 be might years old before starting school does not necessarily mean that all children are developmental-l- y ready to start school. Placing students who are not developmental ready into a stressful school environment can impact children in such a negative way that may not show up until the students enter the difficult transition grades of third, sixth, and ninth grade. Currently d to one-ha- lf schools report that of all students are not ready for the demands being placed on them. In addition to being intellectually children need to have ready, matured socially, emotionally, and physically in order to have a successful school experience. Environmental factors such as educational stimulation, tutoring, and preschool can support growth but nothing can hurry the maturation of a child. Developmental kindergarten (also is known as offered to those children who are not yet ready to enter kindergarten. This type of kindergarten is taught in the same kindergarten environment by the kindergarten teachers but with less academic demands and stress for the students. Both of the lower elementary schools in the Uintah School District, Davis and Maeser Elementary, have a developmental kindergarten program. In addition, these schools offer a pre- - first grade program for those children who have attended kindergarten but are not yet ready to enter first grade. If you have any questions or concerns about whether your child should attend developmental kindergarten vs. kindergarten please do not hesitate to ask the principals at these schools, because if you, the parents, have concerns or feel uneasy about your childs placement, these feelings will be transmitted to your child and cause him or her concern. By giving students who are not ready for the demands of school extra time to develop, school can become a pleasant and successful experience, not a place of stress and frustration.
