The Utes returned Saturday night from a match in Price last Thursday and a weekend tennis tournament in St. George. Team members apparently got what they expected and Merrell got what she wanted stiff competition and seasoning experience for her club. The trip started off with a little surprise in Castle Country. We honestly didnt play as well as I had expected against Carbon, said. Merrell St nor Brett Christensen pulled out the only win in his singles match to keep the Utes front getting skunked by the Dinos. Theyre (the Dinos) coming up here soon and were already looking forward to some sweet revenge on our second meeting, she added. In St. George, the Utes played four matches in two days. While the team did not include all of the returning experienced players because of other school activity conflicts, those who competed in the Bloomington Country Club tournament put in efforts that drew praise from Merrell. "1 think after we got done in St. Softball registrations being taken Uintah Recreation District is now accepting early registrations for the 2003 mens and womens softball leagues and the annual Ice Breaker Tournament. The early registration fee for the mens and womens leagues is $380 per team until April 1 1 . After April 11 the fee is $435. Leagues will begin playing the week of May 5. The registration fee for the annual Ice Breaker Tournament is $135 per team. The final registration deadline is April 25 or until all spots are filled. The tournament will be held May 1, 2 and 3. Participants 16 and older are eligible to play and teams may choose to play in the upper or lower division for the mens and womens leagues. Register is at the recreation office in the Chamber of Commerce building, 134 W. Main, Suite 101 2 or call for more information. 781-098- George, everyone was feeling a little better, Merrell said. Three of the four teams we played were from larger division schools. On Friday, the Utes faced Snow Canyon and Orem. Merrell said that Snow Canyon players are reputed for their talent because they can play year round. Orem is a 5A division school. Brett Christensen and Marc Muir represented Uintah in singles play. Both survived Friday undefeated. Their team mate Josh Reynolds was on fire according to Coach Merrell but lost a tight match against Snow Canyon. He battled to force a tie breaker but lost the skirmish. Uintah lost 2 - 3 to both Orem and Snow Canyon. On Saturday, the Utes got some of the cheapest tennis lessons that Merrell referred to. They had their hands full with East High School from Salt Lake City. Merrell They were amazing, said. You really learn to play tennis when you go up against good teams. She expects East to be favorites for state championships in the 4A school divisions this year. East swept the Utes in 5 straight games. The final games on Saturday were the final doubles game to be decided. Uintah had won two matches and lost 2. The outcome was decided by doubles partners Trent Crane and Jason Fuller. They kept the match interesting by losing their first set then winning the second to force another tie breaker. Their victory in the tie breaker gave the Utes a 3 - 2 win to travel home on. Freshman Brad Gessell and Wes Hadlock formed a partnership for the second doubles team. These two guys are both first time players and have really improved as a pair," Merrell said. Following the matches, players were given the opportunity to have their service hits clocked for speed. Although he is a first year player, Wes Hadlock took fast ball honors with an official 88 mph serve. According to Merrell, most of the players were hitting the ball in the 70s and low 80s. It was a great trip, Merrell concluded. The Utes open Region 10 play Thursday on their own courts. They play Wasatch at 3 p.m. Were feeling pretty confident, Merrell said. We just hope the weather will hold so we can play. against Ben Lomond from Ogden. Only 25 hours quik-tatc- h Congress is following the lead of over 30 states and is now pois ' to enact common sense legislation to stop junk lawsuits. National to the According Foundation Sports Shooting (NSSF), this genre of lawsuits seeks to blame companies in the firearms industry for the criminal misuses of their legally-solhighly regulated, products. In a March 24 news release, the NSSF said that the recently introof Lawful Protection duced Commerce in Arms Act of 2003 is being sponsored by a majority of both the House of Representatives (HR. 1036) and the Senate (S.659). It is said to enjoy broad, support. In the Senate, there are 52 cosponsors of the bill introduced last week by Idaho Senator Larry Craig and Montana Senator Max Baucus. There are also nine Democrats including Minority Whip, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada voicing their support. Across the hall in the House, 46 Democrats are among 247 House members who are sponsoring the bill that was introduced Florida Republican by Congressman Cliff Steams. This is common-sens- e legal reform that will restore integrity to our nations judicial system by preventing frivolous, politically motivated lawsuits from being filed by interest municipalities and anti-gu- n groups in an attempt to bankrupt responsible companies by blaming them for the actions of criminals, said Lawrence G. Keane, vice president and general counsel for NSSF. These politically motivated suits are a tremendous waste of taxpayer money and will not stop a single crime from occurring, nor prevent a single accident. The legislation does not grant any special protection or immunity for firearms manufacturers. A plaintiff truly injured by a defective product or an illegally sold firearm would still be able to bring a lawsuit against a firearm manufacturer. As recently as March 7, 2003, three years of litigation ended when a judge threw out a lawsuit filed against the industry by 12 California cities. These included Los Angeles and San Francisco. The suit was tossed because the cities could not show any wrongdoing. A year ago, the City of Boston voluntarily dropped its lawsuit because it too could not law-abidi- d, announced efforts by the United States Department of Justice to step up prosecutions of those who violate our nation's firearms laws. We are proud of our partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and we are anxious to continue and further our cooperative relationship with law prove any wrongdoing. It finally acknowledged that firearm industry members were committed and concerned to the safe, legal and responsible sale and use of their products. Doug Painter, NSSF president said, Our members strongly support enforcing the existing laws to put away criminals who misuse firearms, and we applaud recently Vermal VouSh Baseball Sign-HO- ps Ages 7 -- 18 DATES: Tuesday, March 25 Tuesday, March 18 Thursday, March 27 Thursday, March 20 Saturday, March 29 TIMES: Tuesday & Thursday, 6 pm - 8 pm Saturday, 8 am to noon PLACE: Vernal City Offices, 447 E.
