Police Vernal The City brochures several has Department with suggestions for safe bicycling and proper helmet use. The Utah Highway Safety Office offers several tips on ways to be safe while riding a bicycle. The first rule in bicycle safety is to be predictable. Bicyclists should obey tialflc signs and signals, never ride against traffic, use hand signals, ride in a straight line and avoid weaving between parked When riding in trallic, bicy- clists should ride in the middle of the lane in slow traffic, follow lane markings, choose the best way to turn left (like an automobile or like a pedestrian), never pass motorists on the right, and go slow on sidewalks as pedestrians have the right of way. The second safety rule is to be alert. When riding a bicycle, people should watch lor cars pulling out of driveways or parking lots, scan the road behind them, avoid road hazards, keep both hands ready to brake and watch for chasing dogs. The Utah Highway Safety Office also provided a summary of Utah bicycle laws. Bicyclists are subject to all the rights and duties applicable to the operator of any other vehicle, which means they must obey traffic lights, stop signs, oneway streets and other basic traffic laws. It is illegal for a bicycle to carry more people than it was designed to, with the exception that an adult may securely attach a child to a backpack. When riding slower than the normal speed of traffic, it is important to ride as near 'as possible to the right-hanedge of the road except to pass, make a left turn or to avoid a hazard. Unless riding on a designated bike path, bicyclists may not ride more than two abreast. When a bicycle path exists adjacent to the roadway, must use the path. bicyclists d Bicyclists must signal intentions to turn right or left continuously at least 100 feet prior to turning. Finally, every bicycle must be equipped with brakes and every bicycle in use after dark must be equipped with a white light lamp on front, red reflectors on the rear and reflective materials on both sides that are all visible for 500 feet. It is also a good idea to wear a helmet. the to National According Traffic Safety Highway Administration (NHTSA), wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by 85 percent. In order to make sure the helmet does its job protecting the riders head, it is important for the rider to fit the helmet correctly. The helmet should sit evenly between the persons cars and rest low on his or her forehead. Foam pads should be placed inside the helmet so it feels comfortable but snug. Chin straps should be as tight as possible. NHTSA recommends that people allow as long as half an hour to get a proper helmet fit. Parents who are trying to fit their child with a helmet should do it while the child is relaxed and has plenty of time, such as when he or she is watching television. When buying a helmet, NHTSA recommends purchasing one that has been tested and approved for protection. Such helmets will have an ASTM, ANSI or Snell sticker on the inside. As there are many brands and sizes from which to choose, it is important to select a helmet that fits well prior to any adjustments. NHTSA also suggest people purchase the helmet that is more comfortable and attractive to them, as they will be more likely to wear it. Any helmet that has been involved in a crash should be replaced and a new helmet should fit tnc rider now, not be big enough for the rider to grow into.
