Biologists working the Green River and Flaming Gorge Reservoir are also paying close attention to this discovery, as Burnt Fork is a tributary to Henry's. Were concerned, maybe even cautiously optimistic but not panicked, said Roger Schneidervin, project leader for the Green River and Flaming Gorge. Weve been expecting whirling disease to show up eventually because they found it in tributaries of the Green River in Wyoming and even picked up a diseased fish as far south as Fontenelle Reservoir, so this was a surprise but not totally unexpected. Schneidervin said when it was reported in Wyoming three years ago, he was aware of research showing kokanee were extremely susceptible to getting Whirling Disease. Kokanee were right up at the top of the list in laboratory susceptibility experiments, Schneidervin said. That had us worried because Flaming Gorge has one of the best kokanee fisheries around. Since then, Ive found only two kokanee waters in drainage systems having disease. whirling Porcupine Reservoir in Northern Utah and Blue Mesa in Colorado. The kokanee are relatively unaffected in each of these reservoirs so thats why Im cautiously optimistic that we can still have a good fishery here. Most of our kokanee breed inside the reservoir so I'm hoping that will mean even less of a chance to acquire the parasite. Schneidervin said he was also cautiously optimistic" about the world famous Green River below the dam. Im cautiously optimistic about the Green for several reasons, Schneidervin said. . fish into First, we stock a the river. These fish are old enough that their cartilage has started to solidify to bone and so avoid the worst affects of the parasite. Second, for some reason, large reservoirs seem to be a relatively effective blockade to the spread and disease. transfer of whirling will Reservoir Flaming Gorge help by acting as a barrier. Third, brown trout and the native whitefish, which breed naturally in the river, seem to be less susceptible to getting the parasite." Even so, Schneidervin wont be giving up his disease and fish health monitoring programs any time soon. TWice a year, when we do our population work on the Green River, a total of 40 fish are collected for autopsy and disease sampling, Schneidervin said. We also collect an additional 150 to 200 fish during our trawling efforts at Flaming Gorge and those are also sent to the labs for a disease check. So far, both waters have been negative for whirling disease. i Yew 531m Weis Fargo.Tih m ,H The Next!
