New RAC member sought The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is in the process of selecting a new at large member for the Regional Advisory Council (RAC). The successful candidate will fill the position being vacated by incumbent Kathy Paulin who will not seek reappointment when her term expires this year. Appointment terms are four years. There are five RACs in Utah. Each month RAC members hold meetings to listen to wildlife proposals from the DWR and the public. They receive input from the public about the various proposals and determine a position then forward their recommendations to the Utah Wildlife Board. The Utah Wildlife Board establishes rules and sets legal policy for the DWR. Each RAC is composed of 7 to 9 citizens that represent various public interests. The local Northeastern Region RAC is comprised of 7 members representing the Ute Tribe, agriculture, sportsmen, public lands agencies, local elected officials, and two at large positions. To be considered for a vacancy, interested people must contact an organization that represents the interest they wish to fill. The interest group can then nominate the individual. For instance, to fill a sportsmen vacancy, a person must contact a sportsmen group in Utah and have them nominate them. Groups must submit their nominations by April I. Because of the time frame, interested people are encouraged to make their contacts as soon as possible. For information about serving as one of the at large representatives, instructions can be obtained at the Vernal DWR office. Organizations will submit their top two candidates for each of the vacancies representing their interest. Nominations should be submitted to the DWR director. Final appointments will be made by the DWR director and the executive director of the Department of Natural Resources. RAC members receive an orientation to become familiar with the wildlife management decision making process in Utah, said Cindee Jensen, DWR assistant director. Each RAC meets approximately 10 times annually. Meetings generally last three to five hours in the COPY am- - evening, typically on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. RAC members are considered volunteers and are eligible to be reimbursed for actual meeting attendance expenditures. However, overnight travel rarely occurs. Attendance is monitored and if more that two unexcused absences occur, it's possible the member will be replaced. Interested candidates should supply the group they wish to represent with their name, mailing address, contact numbers, address, special interest group membership, and a statement of why they wish to be selected.
