Show B6 Vernal Express Wednesday, March 5, 2003 host college rodeo at Western Park USU fto Best hockey season ever ends The Uintah Ute hotkey team ended its season with their last games at Brctkenridge, Colo, I eb 22 The Summit Hotkey team plays on an ite sheet they say is the highest in the world at 9 ,600 feet Summit came out strong against the I'tes and scored two goals in the first two minutes of play. The Utes were caught off guard, but not for long as they held the Bretkenridge team to two goals during the lirst period. Going into the second period, the Utes came out to store Winger Brock Collmsworth shot the putk past the goalie followed shortly by Center Harry Hacking tying the game at two points each. The third period began with both teams battling back and forth for control. Summit finally gamed control and scored their third and final goal of the game The Utes pushed hard and came up with a goal from Harry Hacking, which tied the game with a minute and 40 seconds left to play On the next face-oi- l, center Mitch McCarrel got the puck and used his speed to blow past the defense for a breakaway and a game winning goal. Our early morning practices paid said team captain Harry oil, Hacking, as the Utes out skated and out played the Brcckcnridgc team. The Utes second match-uwas a bit tougher, as Breckenridge came out and scored a goal in the first period. In the second period, Ulc Kyler McCarrel stepped up and scored the Ute's first goal to tic the as game. The tie was short-live- d Summit stepped up again and scored its second goal. With just minutes left in the second period, defensemen Devin Bradley stepped up to the blue line and with a wrist shot into the net tied the game for good as the game ended in a 2 tie. We had more shots on goal, said Coach Dave Pipher, (the Utes had the puck in Breckcnridgc's end the entire third period) than did Summit; we should have won, but al most shots were deflected off boards We had a great season," said Coach Scott McCanel, We would do very well at the Rocky Mountain Youth Hockey Tournament. The Utes will not be playing the RMYH tournament because of conschedules and Sunday flicting games. The president of the league said that some teams will be relieved to hear that the litcs wouldnt be playing. Uintahs hockey team has played tough hockey putting them up with the best in the league. They have three of the fastest players the league has seen combined with some of the est defense. The Uintah Ute defense is great, said Coach Darrell Hacking, they play hard and give a true 10 percent every time they go on the ice. On Feb 14 the Uintah Ute Hockey team went to Kremmling, Colo, to play two games. They tried to play one game, and didnt have fund dodging the orange cones set ... ,Zt, ' k xt, IjTSrtL.. ' , y 4k V. Since the Uintah lost the game ice was so bad and the games counted for playing in the RMYH tournament, both teams decided to play three games in Vernal on f I The USU Uintah Basin Branch Campus will open the Uintah Basin rodeo season this week at Western Park. The main events will be held both Friday and Saturday evenings. Over 300 students are expected to participate and all of the standard rodeo events will be featured. Fourteen different colleges and universities from Idaho, Nevada and Utah will be competing. According to USU Branch Campus rodeo team advisor Dave Woolstenhulme, the stock and announcer are sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA). Diamond G Rodeo of Toquerville, Utah will provide the stock and Don Jesser will provide announcing entertainment. Basin native Charlie Jenkins and his band will provide a prerodeo show between 7 and 8 p.m. Jenkins hails from Roosevelt but has been recording in Nashville for several years. Charlie should provide great entertainment, prerodeo Woolstenhulme said. The local university rodeo team will have 17 members competing. Woolstenhulme said that the Logan campus will also field a separate team. During the competition, Woolstenhulme expects the College of Southern Idaho to set the pace. campus are currently performing well and attracting the attention of their advisor. Lisa Drake is a senior from St. George and competes in team roping, break away and goat roping and is doing well in the all around. Her team mate Angie Gilbert from Castle Dale, Utah is currently third in the goat tying event. On the cowboy side, sophomore Dirk Olsen of Neola is doing well in both the team roping and calf roping events. Woolstenhulme expects all three to lead the local club effort. The prerodeo shows will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The main rodeo events will begin immediately after at 8 p.m. Woolstenhulme said that slack competition will open at 9 a.m. Saturday morning followed by more rodeo action at 1 p.m. Woolstenhulme is expecting a good well run rodeo for fans to enjoy and said that it could not be done without the great local sponsors and business supporters. 4-- President's Day. The Utes then went to Steamboat Springs Colo, to play the Braves for the second game that day. Although the Utes played hard, the Braves had acquired a few new players and were tough. A couple of Ute players showed their speed on Steamboats ice sheet, which was the best ice the Ute had skated on this season. The game ended in a tie. Scoring credits go to Harry Hacking and Kyler McCarrel lor Uintah. Back home and three games with Cuttle Kings of Kremmling, Colo., the Utes wanted a win on the home ice. The Utes got their win, with the score 4 for the Utes with scoring credits going to Kyler McCarrel assisted by Hacking, Kyler McCarrel assisted by Ashley Brown, a goal by Harry Hacking followed by a third goal and a hat trick for Kyler McCarrel. The second with game a was Kremmling hitting game. The Utes were the first to score with a goal by Harry Hacking assisted by Daniel Richardson. Hacking nailed another goal a few minutes later. Still in the first period the Utes were taking charge hitting and taking hits from Kremmling. The final goal of the period and the game for the Utes came from Mitch McCarrel with just 42 second left. Mitch flew past the Kremmling defense and scored unassisted. The Cattle Kings came out in the second and third periods and scored on the Utes to tie the game and that is where it ended. In with the third game Kremmling, the Utes shut out their opponents. The score ended with the Utes winning 0 and a shutout for goalie Tappen Brown. Scoring credits go to Kyler McCarrel assisted by Hacking in the first period; Harry Hacking assisted by Ashley Brown in the second period; Hacking again unassisted in the 5-- second period, Mitch McCarrel and Kyler McCarrel both one goal each in the second period. The league the Utes played in this season included Colorado teams from Gunnison, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs, Kremmling, Eagle Mt Craig and Crested Butte. These teams played 2 to 3 games each time they met. The Utes Hockey Tournament in call for January was a wake-u- p Wasatch, whose coach said they were ranked number one in league play. Uintah defeated Wasatch 0 earlier this season. and Hacking Kyler Harry McCarrel were high scorers for the season with Hacking at 21 goals and Kyler at 17 goals. 8-- season primer contests. Coach Jared McKeachnie is looking forward to a season with good depth in player talent. Im excited, it should be a fun year, McKeachnie said following a week of tryouts and team selections. We have a lot of good sophomore talent and consequently, we should have really strong depth on the team this year. McKeachnie will be Russ Hendersen, Coaches by joined Tony Ozeata and Thad Banbridge in trying to mold that talent and depth into a contender team for Region 10 play this year. The Utes will have 1 1 seniors and 6 juniors returning this year. They will be joined by 13 sophomores and 9 freshmen to round out a team of 39 total players. We were able to pick up a coach for the freshman and sophomore teams and that allowed us to keep a few more players of that age group, Coach McKeachnie said. Coach Ozeata and Banbridge will work the younger team members on soccer fundamentals and skills. According to McKeachnie, varsity and junior varsity team positions have not yet been decided upon. The coaching staff will use the first few games to see how things settle out. While the teams depth is fodder for coaching optimism and heightens expectations for the year, McKeachnie recognizes that the proof is still in the pudding. I guess well see how things look after these first three or four games, he said. The Utes will get two games under their belt in the Moab tournament. 5-mi- le run-wal- k own team is burning up the track as they brought home the team trophy last weekend in Rock Springs, Wyo. Team Altitude Cycle is composed of riders age 4 to 34 and varying skill level. Some members of the team had never raced before and yet they were taking firsts and seconds," said Troy Lupcho, team member. The team is given points for each place the individual members get and at the end of the event the points are totalled. The team with the most points is given the team trophy. BMX racing involves a circular track with varying jumps, turns and rhythms which challenge the rider as he tries to get the fastest time. Rider are divided into division based on age and skill levels. Lupcho said he is trying to get a BMX track established in the Vernal area. Lupcho hopes to set up a practice track behind his bicycle shop, 580 East Main, and may join with a proposed motorcross track north of Vernal. This weekend the team will be competing in Rock Springs again. This time it will be a qualifying event. Members of the team are Ben Dattagc, Kris Wagner, Brandon Potter. Donald Dali, Jessi Murray. Gentry Caldwell, Richi Ouch, Troy Lupcho, Josh Lupecho, Hay lee Dattaee and Kris Wagner. Jr. The College of Southern Idaho team has taken the National Championship for the last two years, Woolstenhulme said. We expect them to be the lead team. Three students from the branch to be Saturday Saturday, March 8, the Uintah Recreation District in conjunction with the Health Beat Health Fair, will host the "Kick-of- f RunWalk" open to all ages of runners and walkers. Each paying participant will receive a run and children 12 and younger can participate for free. Participants in the walking race will begin at noon, and the runners will begin at 12:30. An awards ceremony will be held after the race at the Independence Park by the pool. The registration fee is $20. Participants may register at the Uintah Recreation District office, or registration will be taken at the Vernal Indoor Pool starting at 1 a.m. The course begins at the Vernal Indoor Pool, heads south on 600 West and continues to 500 South. It then turns onto 500 West and continues south to 1500 South. Runners run one mile on 1500 South, where the course heads back to the pool, up 500 East and across on 200 South. The course is fairly level, with a difference in elevation rt, day-of-ra- 1 BMX Team Altitude Cycle brings home the team trophy.
