The fires, which began at the end of June and were contained con-tained near the end of August, burned 95,000 acres, including 40,000 acres of land managed by the Trust Lands Administration. The re-seeding project began Oct 9, and covered approximately 18,000 acres, susceptible to re-seeding. Scott Chamberlain, project coordinator and renewable resource GC I a n F 1 1 c k We Rent Edited Movies! Chxr 600 Popular Titles! 787 West Main 781-6684 Mention thud far 50 iff specialist fix Trust Lands, explained the urgency in re-seeding this fall. Chamberlain said, "Soil stabilization stabiliza-tion was the main objective of this project The organic material surrounding sur-rounding the Douglas Firs was consumed con-sumed by the fires, giving the trees no source for possible re-growth; and the steep slopes were causing immediate soil erosion.' The timing of the project was vital. By planting the seed in the late fall, a blanket of snow will protect pro-tect the seed from die cold; and the melting snow will help the seed sink into me soil. Since most of the soil is arid, this added moisture is a critical criti-cal clement In addition seed is in extremely limited supply nationwide nation-wide due to the intense fire year. GPS maps were used to target certain cer-tain areas with different types of seed as certain blends were selected for areas that receive less water, others fur cooler temperatures and more water. The 217,000 pounds of seed were spread by crop dusting planes, fitted with seed spreading mechanisms on the bottom. The entire seed distribution project required 300 trips. To assist in the Trust Lands efforts, two private landing strips near the Book Cliffs were improved with the donation of time and machinery from an adjacent landowner and the Grand County Road Department The Division of Wildlife Resources also donated employee hours to help with the seed distribution project The School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration is an independent indepen-dent state agency which manages 3.5 million acres of Utah trust lands for the benefit of Utah's schools and other public institutions.
