Show 58 1957 1957 58 were good Uintah football years The State Stale of ot Utah has many I Intense football rivalries There is the Brigham Young I University and University of Utah battles West l High ligh vs East High have been one of the states state's longest rivalries Utah State Stale University vs the Ule University of Utah has been a major one but one rivalry that hits home is the Uintah High and Union High contests UINTAH HIGH In 1957 was all set for the traditional football battle with Union High They had not beaten Union since 1953 Tho The two schools started the football rivalry In 1945 when Union High was then Roosevelt I High ugh In the first quarter of the game according to the Vernal Express on November 7 1957 1951 Uintah and Union were each held scoreless The second quarter saw Uintah explode for two Iwo touchdowns In the third period the Utes Ules scored another touchdown and in the fourth quarter they increased their winning margin to lo 33 to 0 o. o with two more touchdowns TilE THE FIRST score was set up when Cloyd McCarrel pitched a pass to lo Gary Sutton Sulton who galloped deep into Cougar territory McCarrel slipped around right two plays la later ter and ran 13 yards for a touchdown McCarrel scored again from 11 yards out after the Utes Ules forced the Cougars to punt Billy Adams picked up both extra points for Uintah Uintah had a halftime lead of 14 to 0 but that was not enough as Sutton ran straight through the Union line for the third Uintah touchdown in the game McCarrel scored from 11 yards out for the fourth touchdown touchdown touchdown touch touch- down and Marc Bingham made the final tally on a two yard plunge WITH TilE THE win over Union Uintah garnered second place in Region Seven with a record of four and one Uintah had started off league play with 20 to 0 win over Brigham Young High They defeated Lehi 13 to 0 but lost the deciding Region 7 championship game to Pleasant Grove 39 to 7 7 The Utes Ules beat American Fork 13 to 6 just before the battle with wilh Union Some of the football players on the 1957 Uintah team were Glade Ross Hoss Billy Murray Robert Dumas Jerry Murray Hal Hatch latch Lonnie Hadlock Jim Baxendale Marc Bingham Cloyd McCarrel Gary Sutton Billy Adams Bob Caldwell and Larcy Lee The following year 1958 was an even better year for Uintah in football They not only stomped Union 46 to 0 but they won the Region 7 Football Championship They rolled to a 20 to 0 win over Brigham Young High They also defeated Lehi 13 to 0 Pleasant Grove 39 to 7 and American Fork 13 Uintah after wining Region 7 had to play Cedar City In a playoff game in order to go to the state tournament The game was played during a cold freezing 1958 snow storm Early in the game Cedar City's Gary Anderson marched 69 yards for fora a touchdown UINTAH countered when Jerry Murray recovered a and then Marc Bingham scored a touchdown three pl plays ys later to lo tie lie 6 to 6 The extra points for each side were missed However Uintah could not control Gary Anderson and andon on the kickoff by Uintah Anderson Anderson Anderson An An- derson caught the ball at 20 yard line He then to torun torun torun run 80 yards for the game deciding touchdown The Utes lost 12 to 6 in a fumble and interception interception interception in in- filled game The Utes finished with a 7 and 1 record for the year Beside five Region 7 wins Uintah also had practice game victories over Carbon and Springville Varsity team members that year were Herb Snyder Jim Lube Marc Bingham David Bennion George Lee Jim McNaughton Larry Pope Cloyd McCarrel Brian Wright Robert Britt Horrocks Bob Caldwell Jerry Murray Ted Corless Dale Hullinger John Baxendale Jackie Turner and Lonnie Hadlock Coaches were Leo Conk and Bart Johnson |
