Show In 1936 Vernal nips VErnal City for title Baseball is still a popular sport In the Uintah Bain but now such sports as basketball football wrestling plus many other athletic events have caught Up with baseball However In 1936 baseball was the number one sport and nothing else was In reach IN 1936 the Uintah Basin Baseball League was in action again Teams that year Included Included Included In In- Vernal Ft Duchesne Vernal Verrol Camp Civilian Conservation Corp Curp Dinosaur Monument My Myton ton Bridgeland and Roosevelt The squads played practice games in April and May and then had the league games from May until August The champion In 1936 was the Vernal team The Vernal team consisted of youngsters from Ohio who worked in the Uintah Basin area under a job program set up by the government WINNING the Uintah Basin League Championship didn't come easy for the Camp squad They started off ocr by losing two practice games to the Vernal City nine and also lost a practice game to the Dinosaurs Then the league began in May the Camp team still couldn't find the winning ways in that they lost to V Vernal 6 to 5 5 The Camp team finally tasted victory with a 14 to 11 win over the Dinosaurs However they lost again the next week to Myton 10 lO to 8 BEHIND the pitching of Bert Waite and Ralph Cable the Camp nine returned to the winning column with a 4 to 2 victory over a team from Roosevelt After beating Roosevelt the Vernal squad steamed away for eight straight victories victories victories vic vic- tories and won the Uintah Basin Baseball League Championship with a 10 and 2 record My Myton ton and Vernal finished in a tie for second with identical records of 9 and 3 3 The Vernal team after beating Roosevelt defeated Bridgeland 14 to 7 Fort Duchesne 7 to 4 Vernal 4 to 1 Dinosaurs 17 to 2 My Myton ton 21 to 8 Ro Roosevelt sevelt 2 2 Bridgeland 13 to 0 and Ft Duchesne 19 to 6 VERNAL'S City baseball squad in four encounters with the Camp squad had won three of the games The one game they lost cost them the league championship so they were out for revenge when a game was wassel set sel up between them and the Vernal on Labor Day Preston Hale lIale coach of the squad wanted to talk his boys out of playing the game because he figured that they would be suffering from a post postseason postseason postseason season lapse He lie realized that his team wasn't going to be any better now that they were when he was spending two hours every evening practicing with them On Labor day the Camp Company 1507 team defeated Vernal 9 to 6 and added the city championship to their Uintah Basin win Ralph Cable was the winning pitcher as he gave up 11 hits Pitching for the losing team were Abplanalp and Williamson Big hitters for the Camp team were Robertson and Mason Each had a homer to go along their other two hits Vernal had Johnson and Callister as their big hi hitters tiers SOME OF the members of the Vernal team were Preston Hale lIale Ralph Cable Bert Waite McGraw Mains Common McGlennan Robertson Mason and Trolio A number of the Vernal City players were L L.
