Show U Vernal Express Young DivestiocCx canseirs biggest show ffoir ready Four hundred exhibitors and nearly 700 registered animals will make this years Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show and Sale June the largest Vernal show ever. The annual show, which draws from the entire state, will have 180 Uintah County exhibitors, with 45 from Duchesne County and six from Daggett County. Ten other Utah counties will also be represented with exhibitors. The purpose of the annual show is to stimulate interest among livestock breeders and members of 4-and Future Farmers of America ubs of Utah, in feeding and breeding better livestock. The show will furnish interested youth a medium through which they may display and sell their animals. Particular emphasis is placed on showmanship, cooperation, notations on market demands, and giving the public a better appreciation of the value and quality of livestock raised by Utah youth. Raising the animals and showing them teaches responsibility and self confidence, says Connie Holgate, Uintah County 4-staff assistant. The boys and girls learn life building skills. This kind of experience raises good animals and good kids. Holgate says the young exhibitors usually get better than market prices on their animals because sponsors are generous to help cover the expenses of raising the animal, and still allow some funds to be saved for college and future needs. Many youth are able to earn their school needs by raising and exhibiting each year. Each exhibitor must pay an entry fee of $4 per head for all animals attending the show, with entries limited to two animals and one alternate animal per species. Exhibitors must attend to their animals and exhibit them in the show ring when called by the judge, and must also sell their own animal. Due to the nature of 4-- and FFA, record books must be kept up to date at the time of the show and approved by the leaders or County agent. Th se books are submitted when the animals are weighed. A premium of $5 will be paid for the top 25 books. Only good quality animals may be shown and they must be deemed fit, clean and presentable. Sheep must be tight shorn with no butt pattern before they cross the Carcass contort (stwaso p.m. Hog Showmanship 8 a.m. Jr. Judging 11 a.m.-- l p.m. Lamb Showmanship 2 p.m. Beef Market Show 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 4 Hog Market Show 8 a.m. 2003 show Is as follows: Monday, June 2 10 a.m.-- 3 p.m. Weigh-i- n Exhibitors and parent meeting 4 p.m. Beef Showmanship 5 p.m. Waterslide for exhibitors and family p.m. rirj-- 1 if) 8 a.m.-- 6 mi 6:30-11:3- 0 p.m. Continental breakfast 9 a m. Buyers have three options when purchasing animals: support home or slaughter. Nearly 100 sponsors have participated in the 2003 livestock show, the culminating activity for many of the youth participating in the competition. Some exhibitors will take other of their animals to additional county fairs throughout the state. Holgate recognizes the laige number of 4-- and FFA leaders, parents and volunteers required and necessary to help the area youth learn livestock raising and care. She says, "For many of these kids, working with their animals through the year to be ready for this show is a whole family affair. This program is just a winwin situation.
