Show B3 Wednesday, March 5, 2003 Vernal Express TTfU Christopher Lamb gets some personalized time with Discovery's secretary, Kathy Reynolds. Discovery, continued from page B2 scientific, mathematical, and religious traditions that their posterity have carried on or have allowed to disappear. Students are producing PowerPoint presentations in the computer lab, which will complement research presentations. Throughout research reading, "we have teamed about research techniques sources, bibliographies, elements of nonfiction, graphic organizers, adjectives, proper nouns, and use of the library. Mrs. Reynolds feels that her class is filled with hard workers who get along well with each other. The most fun part of the day is in sciactivience, where many hands-o- n ties take place. The students are learning how to integrate their math skills, such as measuring and graphing, with science. Most of the students also enjoy the Russian language lessons, as well as learning about the Russian people and culture. Students in Mrs.Reynolds class are working hard at improving their reading skills and reaching their accelerated reading goals. In social studies, the students are learning about the constitution and how our government is organized and works. During the spring students will hold a mock senate hearing to showcase the things they have learned this year. In Mrs.Fulkcrsons class, students have experienced many fun activities, such as the field trip to Salt Lake City, where they visited Hansen Planetarium. During the visit, Mrs. Fulkerson stood in a cage surrounded by electricity as her students cheered her on. They also saw a laser show and experienced a simulated space shuttle landing and handling of moon rocks. The field trip concluded with a visit to Wheeler Historic Farm, where students got a hands on education about life on a farm at the turn of the century. The DARE program is also alive and well in Mrs.Fulkersons class, with students taking away from the class many important life skills. Finally, Mrs.Fulkcrson's students are writing to a class of 5th grade students in Atlanta, Michigan. The pen pals have traded all sorts of information about the places they live. Mrs. Merkley says that the most exciting thing we have done in is the Accelerated Reading Program. Our goal is to have everyone earn at least one dog tag. We would like to earn at least 200 points each for a total of 5.050 total as a class. Any student who earns 350 points or a black dog tag will be invited to dinner with me at the end of the year. We currently have earned 3525.7 points as a class. Almost everyone has earned a dog tag! Mrs. Moore reports that her class has been working hard on literacy skills. They have used a phonics program called Rewards to improve their decoding, spelling, and fluency abilities. The class reads and discusses in class one novel each month, watch the video, and then compare the novel to the movie. Most of the class agrees that books are better than movies. The class uses Accelerated Reading and Star Reading tests to keep track of reading progress. In English, students wrote and shared tall tales with the class, and Math, they supplemented regular math drills with math games and geometric art items that adorn the room. In addition to starting the year with the great field trip to the Hansen Planetarium and Wheeler Farm, one third of Mrs. Hullinger's class is in Drama this year. Mrs. Hullingcr teaches drama after school on Monday and Wednesday. The other two thirds of drama club comes from the other classes in the school. Some students work as stage crew, creating props and scenery, while the others have lines (speaking parts) they memorize. It has been a lot of fun for the students as they prepare for presentations. Just before Christmas they performed for the school and then for their families, "Scrooge". The drama club is working hard on their next presentation, "Marco's Millions". It is a lot of hard, stressful work and the students handle it well.
