Show Vernal Express Wednesday, February :t. Newsfrom Manila by Clara Robinson 784-3463 ' - V '.".V:-, - W- r.' RICHARD TOLLEY, Uintah School District Business Manager, swears in new school board member, Dr. Robert Jolley. Jolley was chosen to replace Tony Wright who moved from the district to accept employment. Home and School: Vital Links by LILY ESKELSEN President, JJtah Education Association Good sportsmanship LifiJ My job requires me to work most Saturdays which means that I don't get to every one of my kids' baseball, base-ball, soccer, or basketball games. Maybe if I could go more often, I'd understand the rules. But my mind often wanders as my husband tries to explain to me, once again, what "off sides" means. And I find myself my-self paying more attention to spec-tating spec-tating parents than to our battling children. This article, however, is not going to be about those moms and dads who live vicariously through their children, whose coaching contradicts contra-dicts the coach's, and who are ever poised, ready to pounce viciously on any referee, umpire or official who makes an uninspired call. Those parents have always been and will(falways be with us. They are, in my experience, a minority. Parents of both teams sat packed together in the bleachers at my son's last basketball game. Here's what I heard: "Good move, son. You'll get it next time." "Shake it off. You did your best." "Great shot, Jake." (Spoken by a dad to a kid on the other team.) Yes, we did cheer for our own team. We shouted, "Way to go!" and "Alright!" and "That's my boy!" We unashamedly yelled if our child sank the basket. But when either ei-ther side made a perfect lay up, when the ball was passed with skill, when the action shifted direction because of a great steal, approval, appreciation and encouragement came from the group as a whole. And don't think kids aren't taking mental notes on the sportsmanship of their spectator parents. They're learning how to put things into perspective. per-spective. They're learning that it's possible to admire and appreciate the opposition. They're learning how to give their personal best while keeping in mind that it's only a game. Maybe those are the only rules of the game we parents really need to understand. Find the great savings in the Vernal Express and Thrifty Shopper 54 N. VQmal AH, ' 789-3511 Cv'i'iX. Jim. .
