The SADD organization had its national beginnings in 1981 when an East Coast teacher, Robert Anastas, lost two of his students a week apart to drunk driving accidents. Last year the deaths of more than 100 people on Utah highways were attributed at-tributed to drugged and drunk drivers. At least half of those who lost their lives were teenagers. Two of these teenagers were students at Uintah Uin-tah High School. In the aftermath of these tragic deaths, a handful of students formed their chapter of SADD. They were told about the organization by Tina Gurule, a prevention education specialist for Social Services who had picked up a flyer on the group at a sidewalk sale. She is now the adult representative for the group. As funds became critical in promoting pro-moting the prevention of drunk and drugged driving by SADD members, they began brainstorming for projects pro-jects to build a treasury. A lip sync contest held last Friday at Uintah High School was the result of this effort. SADD members decided on rules for judging, who the judges might be and how to use the contest to let the public know who they are and what Fertility at If you are in your thirties and are having your first baby, you are one of the nearly 150,000 women each year who have decided to have their babies at a later ?ge. Reasons for delaying childbirth vary from woman to woman but you as an older mother have probably pro-bably weighed your reasons against concerns about fertility and problems in pregnancy. Like most things in life, having children later in life means trade-offs. Age does affect fertility and may increase in-crease slightly your chances of developing certain medical problems. But good health and good prenatal care can reduce most of these risks. A major concern for women over 30 is their ability to become pregnant. Biologically, a woman's peak reproductive years are her 20s, with a decline in fertility as she grows older. Some fertility problems are naturally due to the aging process; others are linked to pelvic infections and other diseases that reduce fertility. However, the decline in fertility is not so rapid as some reports have suggested. sug-gested. For those couples who did wait and now have infertility problems, increasingly in-creasingly sophisticated tests and Carpet tk Furniture Cleaning Now the very best Carpet and Furniture Cleaning is very affordable. With this in mind, Vernal Mayor Sam Snyder, Bob Pike of the Chamber of Commerce, Mike Mc-Comas Mc-Comas of McDonalds, Uintah County Sheriff Arden Stewart, Glenna Huff of Uintah School District, Clay Johnson of KVEL and Chris Wilson of Uintah High School, were chosen to act as judges. Eight acts were chosen from a preliminary audition. These lip sync artists had a shot at winning one or more of $400 worth of prizes that were donated by local merchants and individuals after some encouragement encourage-ment from SADD members. The winners in Friday's competition competi-tion were: 1st place, Dennis Vincent, Adeena Webster and Diane Chamberlaine for their rendition of "Anything Goes" from the movie "Temple of Doom," 2nd place, Chris Piner and Larry Henggler as Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias singing "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" and 3rd place went to Gary Gray and Diane Chamberlaine mimicking the Eurythmics song, "Here Come The Rain Again." Each contestant was given a prize, right down to the last place winner, and they also had the satisfaction of raising funds for SADD. The audience response to the lip 40 procedures may offer some solutions. A major concern to older mothers, whether it is their first child or not, is that the risks of some birth defects increase in-crease with age. For instance, the incidence in-cidence of Downs Syndrome rises from about one baby in 1,000 at age 29 to about one baby in 100 at age 40. Because of this increased possibility of birth defects, physicians recommend that women around age 35 or older have a test amniocentesis which will pick up some but not all genetic problems during pregnancy. Amniocentesis Am-niocentesis is performed around the 16th week of pregnancy and carries a slight risk of cramping, bleeding or miscarriage. Older mothers appear to have a slightly higher chance of certain medical problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, premature labor and miscarriage. The increased risks of these problems are small, but the older pregnant woman generally has her pregnancy monitored more closely. close-ly. These are all good reasons that the older woman who is planning to get pregnant should visit her doctor for a checkup before she becomes pregnant. It was held in connection connec-tion with National Drunk and Drugged Drugg-ed Driving Awareness Week, Dec. 9-15. Members of SADD have the following follow-ing suggestions and information to help you safely through the holidays: Plan your transportation needs before your start drinking. Friends don't let friends drive drunk. Remember that Utah has the toughest drunk driving laws in the nation.
