Show A11 Wednesday, January 17, 2007 Vernal Express o n mmm By Elizabeth Goode Express Writer Fifty years ago the Vernal Express, January 17, 1957 issue, had the following story on the front page: "Flaming Gorge, 'Dinosaur' Funds Asked in President's Budget Message" "President Eisenhower's budget message Wednesday included recommendations for $3,700,000 for the Flaming Gorge Unit of the Colorado River Storage project and $323,437 for Dinosaur National Monument The information was disclosed in a long-distance phone call from Sen. Wallace F. Bennett's office in Washington, D.C. to the Vernal Express. 'The funds will provide for completion of the access roads to Flaming Gorge dam site, a temporary bridge, diversion tunnel and start of the work on the prime contract for construction con-struction of the dam. $1,020,000 already has been allocated for this construction. 'Work is scheduled to con tinue on construction of the administration building, warehouse ware-house and permanent hous ing,' Senator Bennett said. Advance Planning The budget message also included funds for advance planning on the Vernal unit of the Central Utah project to provide a definite report during the fiscal year 1958 to enable construction to begin. ri Also , recommended were funds for extensive work at Dinosaur National Monument. ! Equipment was moved in for preliminary work this week. New Town A government and contractors contrac-tors camp will be constructed at Dutch John Flat. The camp will include 40 permanent houses, 50 temporary houses and 23 'prefabs.' The prefabricated prefabri-cated houses will contain two bedrooms and are being manufactured manu-factured in California. They are scheduled to be delivered in February. Mr. Walton said they wanted to get the -houses across the river while it was still frozen as the bridge will not be ready in time. When the camp is completed, complet-ed, trailers will be moved from Manila to Dutch John Flat 'The new town site will contain con-tain the regular utilities of a small town,' Mr. Walton said. Part of the utilities will be supplied by the Bureau of Reclamation and the rest by the contractors. Specifications on the prime contract will be out late next winter and bids will be let in the spring of 1958, the engineer engi-neer said. The engineer said that at the peak of construction about 200 persons would be employed by the Bureau, whereas 1,500 may be employed by the contractors. con-tractors.
