They ran a small dairy farm for several years. Babe is now Bible Sunday, Nov. 18 to be observed in America On November 18, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, tens of thousands of churches, all the way from huge urban complexes to the simplest frame country coun-try chapel, will unite in celebrating a cherished American tradition, Bible Sunday. This is the 70th consecutive year of Bible Sunday, the oldest continuous observance of the Bible cause on a national na-tional scale. It is sponsored by the 168-year old American Bible Society, who introduced the idea to this country coun-try in 1900. Although nearly all churches will celebrate this historic occasion on Nov. 18, a few have chosen another Sunday for their observance. Whatever the day, worship services will be central to the observance. Many churches are also organizing other outreach activities around the event, so that the surrounding community com-munity may get the message too. That message has to do with the translation and distribution of the scriptures throughout the world, the always pressing need to supply growing grow-ing churches and missions as well as individual believers overseas with copies of the printed word of God. In many places there are acute shortages - of printed scriptures, yet people are asking more and more urgently for them. At the same time, congregations will pause to give thanks for how richly they and other Americans, in contrast, are blessed with an abundance of scriptures today. The focus of Bible Study this year is on four countries. They are India, Mexico, Kenya and Zaire. Each one is calling for special help to fulfill the promises they have made, on faith, to supply their own people with God's iGampliglTtir lEUfltaurarrt 120 East Main Vernal Call 789-0312 to reserve special times. India, for instance, has programs that call for scriptures in oyer 100 languages. Mexico wants to supply refugees from Guatemala with copies of the word. Kenya and Zaire have vigorous programs of evangelization requiring the scriptures as well as needs to supply growing congregations with Bibles and New Testaments in local languages for worship and Christian Chris-tian education. ABS top executive, Alice E. Ball, points out that almost 80 percent of the entire world's people must still look to the Bible Societies as their main or only on-ly source of scriptures. With the global population now well past the four billion mark, there is much to be done, she says, and that is why it is so necessary for Americans to honor and support Bible Sunday. The American Bible Society, founded found-ed in 1816, is now at work in more than 180 lands. The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued the following statement: "The week of Nov. 18-25, 1984, has been designated National Bible Week in the United States. We heartily endorse en-dorse this observance and encourage our members everywhere to do the same by consistently instilling Bible teaching into their own lives and the lives of their children. "Within the scriptures is found an unfailing formula for peace and joy, especially in the words and teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, our divine Savior, the Prince of Peace, the Redeemer of the world. "We encourage all to partake of the . wisdom, the inspiration and the Lord's plan for more abundant living that are found in the Bible." THANKSGIVING DAY Relax Have Dinner With Us! Turkey Dinner: Potato & Gravy Yams Dressing Rolls Pumpkin Pies Salad Bar All the trimmings All for S6.00 Editor's note: Tooth Talk is a new feature prepared exclusively for the Vernal Express by Angela S. Barnes, a professional dental hygienist. What is a dental hygienist? Some people call them the "professional toothpickers" while others say "the person who cleans my teeth." Professional Profes-sional hygienists on the other hand, like to call themselves "preventative professionals" in dental care. A hygienist specializes in cleaning teeth and is trained to recognize signs of early dental disease. As professionals pro-fessionals in preventative dentistry, the hygienist tries to educate their patients pa-tients on why and how to prevent tooth decay and pyorrhea, also known as periodontal disease. Each patient receives individualized individualiz-ed instruction on how to improve their personal oral hygiene. A treatment treat-ment plan is then developed for each patient, and is designed to meet their personal needs. The average person requires a thorough cleaning at least once a year. Children should see their hygienist so they may learn at an early age the importance of good toothbrushing habits. A simple pro-phy pro-phy (cleaning of teeth), followed by a flouride treatment is an excellent way to prevent tooth decay. In summary, a registered dental hygienist is a licensed, professional oral health educator and clinical operator who, as auxiliary to the dentist den-tist uses preventative, therapeutic and educational methods for the control con-trol of oral diseases to aid individuals and groups in attaining and maintaining main-taining optimum oral health.
