Rompers made of corduroy for youngsters might well perform differently and require different dif-ferent care from corduroy used for a tailored suit, bedspread or even draperies. Learn how to predict fabric performance before you buy and avoid later disappointment. Decide in your own mind the relative importance of each of these factors: appearance, comfort, durability, and care required. How and where the fabric will be used us-ed or worn will determine the relative importance of each factor. For instance, in-stance, appearance may be the deciding factor when selecting an evening dress while the amount of care required will be the more important impor-tant consideration when choosing children's play clothes. To select the best fabric for your in-dividual in-dividual needs, read hangtags and labels. Many fabric characteristics are not apparent at first glance or feel so be sure to check the label itself. Ready-to-wear is required to carry a label indicating fiber content. In addition, addi-tion, the Federal Trade Commission now requires labels giving care recommendations be attached to apparel. ap-parel. In addition, many clothing manufacturers include more detailed information about special finishes that affect their performance. With a basic knowledge of fibers, fabrics, and finishes, one can decide if the fabric is appropriate for the intended use. APPEARANCE While color, style, design, and texture tex-ture of a fabric or garment are matters mat-ters of choice and often depend on one's mood, there are other less obvious ob-vious things to consider when making a purchase. Wrinkle resistance: resiliency is an important factor in appearance. Wrinkle resistance is determined by a number of things. Fiber content: generally, nylon, polyester, acrylic, triacetate and blends containing a predominance of these fibers are more resilient than untreated un-treated cotton or linen. Fabric construction: knit fabrics are usually more wrinkle resistant than woven fabrics. Finish: permanent press is the most widely used finish that affects fabric performance. The application of a chemical resin and heatsetting process pro-cess is usually applied to a blend of cotton cot-ton and a synthetic fiber to assure wrinkle resistance. Garments of 100 synthetic fiber are naturally resilient and do not require a finish for wrinkle resistance. Permanent press finishes lessen the durability and wear life of fabrics. Creases, edges such as collar points and cuffs, and areas of abrasion may show wear by fraying, losing color col-or or pilling. Colorfastness: if an article is two-tone two-tone or is multi-colored containing both light and bright colors, check the label for care information andor a statement that the article is colorfast. Bright or dark colors should usually be washed alone the first time they are laundered. If trim is not detachable, both trim and garment fabric should be colorfast and compatible in required re-quired care. Fashion textures: since synthetic fibers are thermoplastic or heat-sensitive, heat-sensitive, they can be permanently pleated, embossed or shape-set with a combination of heat and pressure. This enables the garment manufacturer to create interesting fashion textiles and designs. Comfort: garments should be comfortable com-fortable as well as attractive. Comfort can be affected by a number of things. Fit: fit is important, as it affects not only how garments look but also how GENESIS The New Beginning is a complete, nutritionally balanced way to eat, . .enjoy good food AND LOSE WEIGHT! If a garment has a permanent press finish or heat-set creases, make sure it fits since it is often impossible to remove previous creases after alteration. Consider how active you will be wearing the garment walking, bending, ben-ding, sitting, or reaching to decide if the fit is acceptable. Stretch: fabrics that stretch are often preferred for active children or adults because they allow greater freedom of movement. Comfort of stretch fabrics may be due to elastic fibers, textured yarn structures or fabric construction. When purchasing a garment in which the stretch factor is important, check for the direction it stretches. Some fabrics stretch both ways, others only across grain (usually across the body). Absorbency is a characteristic that affects wearing comfort as well as functional value. Absorbent fibers such as cotton or linen feel comfortable comfor-table on hot days as well as in humid climates because they absorb perspiration. For some home furnishing items, towels for example, absorbency is of prime importance. Most synthetic fibers are nonabsorbent and may be uncomfortable in warmer temperatures. However, textured yarns, blends with absorbent fibers, or loose, open construction which allows air to circulate through the fabric will improve comfort. Static electricity may build up in nonabsorbent fabrics, causing the fabric to cling to the body and attract lint and soil. Using fabric softener when laundering nonabsorbent fabrics will minimize static buildup. Fiber modifications and special finishes that eliminate static cling have been developed and are identified on attached labels and hangtags. Durability: durability can determine deter-mine the suitability of a particular fabric for a specific purpose. Items for special occasions may be used or worn infrequently and need not be as durable as work apparel, children's clothing or active sportswear. Snagging: knits are more susceptible suscepti-ble to snagging than woven fabrics because of their looped construction. Snagging occurs when a yarn loop catches cat-ches on a rough object and is stretched stretch-ed or pulled to the surface without being be-ing broken. Holes or runs occur in some knits when the yarn is broken. Holes most often occur in cotton knit garments when a yarn is broken, and become more apparent each time the item is laundered. Shrinkage: stability, or shape and size retention, is an important aspect of fabric durability. Knit fabrics tend to shrink more than woven fabrics because the fabric is of looser construction. con-struction. If any fabric, knit or woven, is stretched during manufacture, it may relax and shrink after wear or laundering. Check hangtags for a stabilizing process pro-cess such as Sanforizing; Finishes such as Pak-Knit or Thai-Knit are sometimes applied to cotton knits for shape retention, whereas heat-setting processes may be used to stabilize synthetic syn-thetic fabrics. Labels do not always indicate in-dicate heat-setting treatments. Garment construction: check garment gar-ment construction for durability. Seam allowances should be adequate. Seam edges should be finished if the fabric ravels. Loose threads from seams should be clipped. Seamlines and zipper plackets should not be puckered. Buttons, snaps, and fasteners should be securely sewn in place. Care required: maintaining that "just purchased" appearance in garments and fabrics requires careful attention to fabric care procedures. Read labels that give manufacturer's manufac-turer's care recommendations. Garments and fabrics cannot be expected ex-pected to perform satisfactorily unless they are cared for according to recommendations. For example, permanent press and easy-care garments may require ironing iron-ing if not dried in a dryer. Bright colors col-ors may fade if laundered in hot water. Flame retardant finishes may not be effective if care recommendations are not followed. : 7 : , 1 , 3 - it.- jpr f ' " MIKE HAMMER Stacy' Keach stars as hard-boiled hard-boiled private eye Mike Hammer in "More Than Murder," a special two-hour preview of the new CBS series "Mickey SpiMane's Mike Hammer," airing THURSDAY, JAN. 26.
