Show I Mother of Mrs Chew Dies at I I Age of Funeral services for Mrs Sylvia Eliza Sanford Metcalf oldest woman in Utah and mother of Mrs Mary E Chew of Vernal who hn Aio died August 17 12 at at atler ather her ler home at Gunnison were held Saturday at the Gunnison Ward Chapel Mrs MM Metcalf was born Nov 16 1845 in Hancock County a daughter of Cyrus and Sylvia Clark Sanford Her family came cameto cameto to Utah in 1849 1848 settling first in Springville where Mr Sanford served as the first mayor and school teacher She lived In Springville until her marriage to Anthony Metcalf in 1882 1862 when they moved to Sanpete County as colonizers In 1872 they moved to Gunni Gunni- Gunnison Gunnison son where Mrs Metcalf has since resided Mrs Metcalf a true pioneer learned the Indian language and used the frontier arts of wool woolI carding spinning weaving and sewing In n making hh clothes for I her t fifteen children n Her husband was a calvary calv ry lieutenant during the Black BlackHawk Hawk Indian wars He died in 1887 H Mrs Metcalf a practical nurse was honored on her birth birth- birthday day anniversary by presentation of tf i pageant depicting her life he is survived d by five daugh- daugh da ugh ugh- Including Mrs Chew 50 90 grandchildren great great great-gr nd- nd children and ana and 15 great great-great- grandchildren Forty of her grandsons and I great grandsons great great- served In the armed force during World War II Ih |
