Show r ELIZABETH ELLEN BESSIE SWOPE DILLMAN SWAIN final rites held Services honor Bessie Swain Funeral for Elizabeth Ellen Bessie Swope Dillman Swain 85 Vernal willbe will willbe willbe be held today Thursday at 1 pm p.m. in the Vernal Eighth Ward Chapel She died April 21 at am a.m. in the Uintah County Hospital of a heart attack MRS SWAIN was born September 10 1888 in Princeton Princeton Princeton Prin Prin- ceton Missouri to Andrew P. P Swope and Rosetta Stone McDonald Swope During her early life she lived in Leon and Charleston Iowa She attended Indianola College and a business college at night and took dress making lessons during the day While in Charleston she met Elmer Dillman and they were married July 8 1908 in Denver Colorado Following their marriage they lived a short time in Vernal and then moved to a ranch west of Roosevelt Fourteen months later they sold the ranch and moved to Vernal She boarded people in her home and Mr Dillman worked at the Ashley op Co-op and cared for his funeral business IN 1910 they purchased a two- two room log cabin and moved there where the family resided until 1952 Nine of Mrs Swains Swain's children were born in the cabin In 1923 they built a concrete funeral home IN 1919 a serious flu epidemic broke out Mr Dillman had 71 deaths to take care of as mortician and traveled from one end of the valley to the other in this capacity While traveling he was caught in the rain and took cold This developed into the flu and on December 9 1918 he died Following his death Mrs Swain cared for all the funerals SHE WAS a widow for a short time and then in 1920 married Franklin Enic Swain in Vernal Following two fires in their funeral building they moved the business into their home on South 2 West where it remained until they sold it to Arben Jolley in June of 1952 During World War II four of Mrs Swains Swain's sons Gerald Dillman Glendon Swain Loren R. R Swain and Laurence R. R Swain were in the armed forces Mrs Swain gave beds and food to all servicemen who came to Vernal and had no place to stay In one month she kept 75 servicemen During this time she also took a correspondence course in embalming and funeral direction from Eckles College of Embalming in Philadelphia Pennsylvania AFTER SELLING the Swain Funeral Home Mrs Swain and her son Bob rented an apartment and lived in the basement of Paul and Isobel Batty until purchasing a home on Fifth North Later Mr and Mrs Batty purchased the Echo Park Motel and Mrs Swain took care eare of the office She worked there 11 years Mrs Swain was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Camp Vernal Rebekah Lodge Business and Professional Women's Club Thalia Club past member of the Ladies Ladles Aid of the Congregational Church the of the American Legion and was a Relief visiting teacher SHE SUE IS survived by five sons and two daughters Harold Dillman Layton Utah Gerald T. T Dillman Brigham City Glendon Swain Colorado Springs Colorado Larry R. R R Swain Portland Oregon Bob Dob F. F Swain Reno Nevada Mrs Bill Dill Julia Robinson Rockville Maryland and Mrs Paul Isobel Batty Datty Vernal 23 grandchildren 40 great grandchildren one sister Mrs Fannie May Brunner Amarillo Texas Burial will be in the Rock Point Cemetery |
