The annual budget hearing for Granite School District will be held here Tuesday, beginning at 8 p m The Board of Education is expected to improve a mill levy increase totaling 3 90 mills The increase is mandated by the state as part of an effort to equalize mill levy burdens statewide. The increase will not bring additional dollars to the district because the state will decrease the money it pays to the district. RETIRED . . . In order to help soften the burden to the taxpayer the district is cutting a mill off its voted leeway levy. Granite patrons will be paying 40.50 mills in property taxes if the board action is taken, compared to 37.55 last year. At the outbreak of World War II he entered the Naval Air Corps as an ensign and was stationed in Chicago, San Diego and Seattle, leaving the service after the war with the rank of lieutenant. Mr. Eastman returned to his job, but soon received an offer from the University of Utah, where he worked as field director of the development fund for six year. After that, he operated his own business for 10 years, then decided to enter the field of education. He taught for one year at Kearns junior high before entering Kearns high. I thoroughly enjoyed my years at Kearns high, he said. Its a fine school with a tremendous student body, a place where good education can take place. Mr Eastmans wife Betty and daughter Christine are both deceased. He plans to spend part of his time in traveling. I think variety is really the spice of life, he observed. KEARNS. Dan Eastman is in the first stages of retirement this summer after teaching Kearns high social studies classes for the last 16 years. I started at Kearns the day the school opened and never missed a day through the last day of school this year, he commented. Mr. Eastman was born in Salt Lake and graduated from West high in 1932, the recipient of an award as outstanding graduate of the year. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1937 and worked as a claims adjuster in Portland, Ore. for Unity - Theme Of Hometown Days Noted KEARNS. Building on the theme a planning Unity in Community, committee is designing a wide range of neighbors meeting neighbors activities for the annual Hometown Days celebration. The affair will take place July 5. The committee has the endorsement of all churches and schools in the area, plus the Kearns Town Council and business and civic groups in the community, according to Jerry C. Wang. W'ang and George Starks, for the event, and their committee, are inviting all Kearns residents to save gas and stay home to enjoy July 4th parades and activities in neighboring communities of Granger, Magna, Murray, West Jordan and Riverton - and to save July 5 for the Kearns Hometown Days parade and a full day of fun, food and entertainment for the entire family. Anyone wishing further details on participation in the parade, the minimarathon, booths or a talent show, or may contact Mr. Wang, Mr. Starks, Photography Contest Winds Up Tomorrow GRANGER. The wind up of a photography contest at Granger Library will be conducted at 2 p.m tomorrow (Friday) when the winner will be announced. Photograms will be made for a charge of 25 cents. Those desiring to toparticipate may still to Tina Timko, young day, according pre-regist- adult librarian. A family health program (FHP) exercise program will be offered during June at the library. Dr. Tom Stogdill will conduct classes on Mondays and Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and the entire family is being invited to participate. A class will begin Tuesday. Timed to end just prior to the fireworks display, the game will feature the Kaarns American Legion team and a Greeley, Colo, squad. The games w nl be played on the Babe Ruth diamond. Governments funds appropriation recommendations during a monthly meeting held Friday in South Salt Lake. Members of the County Council of debate issues surrounding (COG) - COG Approvals Include Crime Watch Help SO. SALT LAKE. Applications for federal grants for projects ranging from crime prevention to alcohol rehabilitation were endorsed by the County Council of Governments here Friday. The council okayed an application from the Salt Lake Assn, of Community Councils for a $351,133 grant from the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration to organize community Crime Watch programs like the one operating so successfully in the Kearns area. An application for $64,966 to evaluate the probation services offered through the State Juvenile Court from the LEAA also gained COG approval. Another proposal gaining approval was a $45,000 grant application to help in constructing a center for consumer education in the county by the State Division of Consumer affairs. Members endorsed the intent to file to the Dept of Health, Education and Welfare for $83,352 for an Urban Indian youth alcoholism reduction program for an application Two Utahns groups, Against Hunger and the Utah Migrant Council received endorsement for grants totaling $116,000 for community food and nutrition programs The State Dept, of Community Health Services gained approval for its notice of intent to file application for a $5 6 million supplemental food program for women, infants and children The Granite Mental Health Center received endorsement for three grants totaling $178,040 from HEW and the LEAA A new subdivision slated to be installed at 5450 So. 3200 West and another at 3500 So. 5020 West, gamed approval from the county. - Basic Ballet Being Learned By Kearns Girls In Summer School Classes KEARNS. Anne Mitchell is conducting classes in basic ballet technique as part of the summer school program at West Kearns elementary. Students are learning that ballet is fun and also good exercise. There are 21 girls in the class, age 5 to 9, noted Mrs. Mitchell. Boys would be welcome too, she said, adding that most of the boys seem to THIS WAY demonstrate . . . proper Teacher think ballet is just for girls, not realizing that it is hard work and requires as much strength and skill as any sport. Ballet is not just a matter of looking pretty, it takes work and perseverance to develop the grace and coordination of a ballerina, she observed. The class members learn the first Ann Mitchell to ballet technique ballet positions and do some barre work, she said. Some students who become especially interested may go on with classes after school starts. Mrs. Mitchell teaches a ballet class during the school year right after school for interested students.
