Show Page 2 Thursday, July 7, 1960 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Goes Anything The fight is over, but the memory lingers on. For the first time in the history of boxing, a championI ship fight was held in Salt Lake City. Frankly, Derks at seats was amazed to see the many empty field the night of the match. I was sure that people would come from many miles around to watch the championship bout. Perhaps the people who stayed known away were the smart ones. They might have that and decision that it would be a ome town unless the contender didnt have a chance of winning it was by a knockout. I dont profess to be an expert in the fight racket. I didnt sit ringside nor did I talk to the fighters before the boht. I didnt watch the pugilists train and I didnt particularly make note of their past and performances. All I did was to go to the fights until around see a couple of guys belt each other one of them came up the winner. Fro mthe start, neither Fullmer or Basilio made the fight the least bit exciting. Actually, I cant remember one instance where anyone jumped out of his chair and yelled for his favorite. I objected almost as much as Basilio did when the referee stopped the fight. It seemed to me that Bassilio knew there was only a few seconds to go and he was trying to keep out of Fullmers way so he could rest between rounds. And in my book, theres nothing wrong with that. But while he was crouching and keeping his head covered, te referee put a stop to the whole thing. Lets face it; Bassilio could have come back after a minutes rest and given Fullmer a run for his money. This was Basilios last chance at the championship and he sould have at least had the opportunity to finish the fight. If it would have ended up with ! w- - either one flat on the canvas there couldnt have been any argument. Even if it went the whole 15 rounds and Fullmer received the nod, I dont think Basilio would have argued too much. There was a lot at stake for both fighters. Both fighters knew that one of them might get hurt in the fight and they knew it wouldnt be a Sunday School picnic. The fight would have been a lot more popular if it had gone all the way. If referees are so concerned about a fighter getting hurt, why didnt they stop the fight long before Clark didnt know what day it was? From where I sat Clark was punchy from the g word go. Rademacher was him to death and Clark showed it. This was of the great of all time. Clark didnt have a chance from the start, but he was either too tough or too stupid to fall over. Clark was supposed to be a knock-ou- t champion. This is probably true until you analyze whom he knocked out. I saw him knock out three opponents in one night but if you saw the guys he knocked out, you would have to agree it was no accomplishment at all. Clark isnt a fighter, hes a big bully with a good punch and if his opponent isnt prepared for it he ends up on the canvas. Rademacher carried his guard down around his stomach, but Clark didnt hit him. It was a miserable h and everyone knew very soon that Clark didnt have a chance. If Clark is smart, hell give up the fight game while he still has all his marbles. The whole point of the argument is, why did they stop the Fullmer-Basili- o fight When Basilio wasnt hurt too badly and let the fight go on when Clark was walking around on his heels most of the fight?
