Phone: CY ANYTHING GOES There are very few things that Im good at. But I can truthfully say that there is one field of in which I excell. Whenever I decide to take in a movie I can invariably pick out a real stinker. I did it again last Saturday night. It was' a miserable night. It was snowing and the roads were covered with ice. But I braved the elements, figuring that a good movie is worth the danger of driving to town. After perusing the movie ads I suggested to my wife that we see ON THE BEACH. After all, the advertisement said If you never see another motion picture in your life you must see this one. And I think they were right, Ill probably never go to see another motion picture for the rest of my life. Seriously, I was looking forward to this picture with a great deal of interest. The plot sounded terrific. The time was 1964. Somebody started a war, they couldnt remember who, the bombs went off, the radiation killed every one in the world except the people in Australia. They knew that It was just a question of time when they too would feel the effects of radiation and drop dead like so many flies. With a plot like that I figured that the possibilities were unlimited. What an opportunity for someone in the movie to denounce war and its possible aftermath. What a chance to see how different people would react if they knew that death, not only for themselves, but for every living thing on earth was only a few months away. What a splendid chance for someone to philosophize in general about the many aspects of life. But what did the producers do with a plot like this? Nothing. I understood that movies were outspoken in this day and age but from the looks of this particular movie the whole thing was done with a tongue in cheek attitude. Gregory Peck is theoretically a good actor. If he showed any emotion whatsoever, considering the predicament he was in, I failed to see it. At one point he did try to explain his feelings to Ava Gardner, but it seemed like he read the script thru once and then tried to remember the lines. The whole conversation was closely akin to pulling teeth. The only good and exciting part of the show to me was the auto race which Fred Astaire won. At least it woke everyone up for a while. Astaire did a pretty good job of acting, which is more than I can say for any of the other actors. en-deav- er Mr. Milton Lundeen, a missionary will be thfe guest speaker at Kearns Kearns Bennion Kearns By St. Pauls at a special meeting next Thursday. All fathers and their sons are invited to attend. The boys do not have to belong to any scout troop. Reservations may be made by calling Mr. Walter Slygh, CY Kay SPECIAL The picture reminded me of the English tude of life. Everyone knew that the end was just around the corner and yet they acted as if nothing were going to happen. They bought lawn mowers to use next spring knowing all the while that no one would be there to mow the lawn. In fact there wouldnt even be a lawn. Maybe Im not being fair inasmuch as I have never been in their particular situation but it seems to me that different people would act in different ways knowing the end was near. But everyone acted more or less the same. With a little variation of course but basically they all accepted it with similar attitudes. Gregory Peck was married and had a couple of children. He knew, that they were all dead and yet towards the end of the picture he took off in his submarine to go home and see them. In the book he bought his boy a fishing pole and his daughter a pogo stick to take with him but someone had the good sense to leave that part out of the picture. It might be allright for someone to keep the departed alive in their minds but this was a little ridiculous. Ofcourse by the time the end of the picture came around( and it was none too soon) he and Ava Gardner were in love. When he had to bid her a fond adieu it left everyone, including dear old Ava, very cold. If he had a chance to give out with a little feeling anywhere in the movie this was it. But he didnt grasp the opportunity. Ive seen guys kiss their wives goodbye with more feeling when they were going down to the grocery store for a bagful of bagels. So there, in case youre interested, and Im sure youre not; is my reaction to ON THE BEACH. Im positive that this review will not deter any of you from going to see this movie. And I imagine that many people who see it will probably say that its a great movie. And this is certainly their privilege. Walking out of the movie house I thought maybe I was too critical and expected too much. Perhaps I wasnt justified in my appraisal of it. Maybe I was just tired. But I was reassured that my opinion was correct when my wife calmly said, Boy, was that a waste of time. I have the utmost faith in my wifes observations, especially if they coincide with mine. atti- ADVERTISING RATES FOIV tlOII DRIUIIERS Your Agents for PREFERRED RISK MUTUAL INSURANCE CO. 150 South 4th East Empire DAVID G.
