During hot weather lawns scalped or cut short are burned by the heat of the sun. Third, adequate fertilizer is necessary for a good thick turf of grass. Over fertilizing during hot weather is not desireable, but a light application of nitrogen type fertilizer is all right. General recommendations for applying fertilizer to develop a thick turf of grass is to make the first application early in March, the second about Memorial Day, and the third about Labor Day. In most cases lawns will thrive well without any browning or dying if these three practices above are followed, Mr. Burningham concludes. 12 .Green Lawns Need Ca re Green lawns mean good management. Healthy lawns are very seldom Injured with insects or diseases or infested with weeds, according to Melvin S. Burning-haUSU Extension Agent in Salt Lake County. In order to develop a healthy lawn, three management practices should be followed. First, water thoroughly and not so often, apply one to two Inches of water at one application, then dont water for four to eight days. Light watering daily encourages shallow grass roots, yellow lawns and weeds. Second, mow the lawn never closer than m, residue. The chemicals that can be sprayed on edible produce are: malathion, 2 tsp per gallon of water; Sevin, 2 teaspoons per gallon; Dibrom, 1 tsp. per gallon, or diazinon, 1 tsp. per gallon. Any one of these chemicals can be sprayed on the vegetable garden or fruits and will kill grasshoppers for several days. Deildren, 12 tsp. per gallon of water, aldrin, 1 tsp., chlor-dan- e, 1 2 tsp., or heptachlor, tsp. per gallon of water, should NOT be used on fruits or vegetables, or on forage that will later be fed to livestock. One of these materials can be used to treat the fence lines, borders, vancant lots, ditch banks, shrubbery or lawns. Dont spray trees or shrubbery with chlordane because of possible chemical burn to the foliage. Spraying with one of the above mentioned chemicals every 2 or 3 weeks will keep the grasshopper population to a minimum. ReprtedGood Most Areas Mr. Oler Says: The thing that keeps the average man from investing in the stock market is the prices in the supermarket. LEROY OLER Utah anglers are presently en- joying one of the best fishing seasons in several years. With the excellent water conditions expected for fall, the angling season should continue to be outstanding through the fall months. Spokesmen for the Utah State Department of Fish and Game noted that reports coming into their offices indicate good creel returns from nearly all waters throughout the State. All waters in the State are now open and accessible with the exception of a few in the Uinta Mountains. Streams are stocked and reported in excellent condition for anglers. Now is the time to enjoy an outing and take advantage of the fine f fishing opportunities available GAIL ANDERSON 4122 So. 400 West M r "HELLO MOTHER" Have you called Long Distance recently and said that?
