Anything Publisher Entered as 2nd Class matter at the Post Office at Salt Lake City, Utah under the Act of March 3, 1879 ESTABLISHED 1954 Published weekly by Valley View News Publishing Company at Salt Lake County, Utah Phone EMpire . Post Office Box 2608 - Salt Lake City, Utah Consequently LIFE magazine wrote this about the farm mess, The appalling surpluses of basic crops, and the increasing dependence of their growers on price subsidies, is a scandalous rebuke to the farm policies of both parties. Not only do the two political parties disagree on the farm problem but the three general farm organizations are usually widely split on farm programs. The farmers themselves dont even know what they want or what is good for them. A couple of weeks ago I made mention of the fact that our farm situation is in a real mess. I objected morally to the subsidies the government is paying to the farmer. I said and still say, that the reason both political parties are handing money hand over fist to the farmers is simply to buy their vote. It seems that the assistant Executive Secretary of the Utah State Farm Bureau Federation read my Editorial Costly Civic Improvement While most of the city is still joyously staggering under the announcement that the commissions of Salt Lake City k wide and Salt Lake County have decided to erect a civic center, many Salt Lakers are reeling from the greater announcement that such a building program will run in excess of $8 to $9 million dollars. two-bloc- Caesar was ambitious, says the Bard of Avan. If so, twas a grevious fault, and grievously hath he paid for it. If the plan as now constituted is adopted, Salt Lakers will be taking upon them a staggering financial responsibility, one that, in the face of many other civic improvements, must be carefully considered. It seems paradoxical that at one moment Salt Lakers are considering releasing peace officers from the force because of lack of funds, and at the same instant are considering an enormous $9 million project. Surely, some carving could be done on this immense figure. Perhaps educators could be called in to help the commission budget their money they have had years more experience in doing it. In the Deseret N,ews, a recent article pointed out that the beautiful student Union Building on the University campus cost $2.5 million dollars. Three such buildings could be erected for some $7 million dollars, still $2 million less than our new civic center would cost. Caution must be exercised in a great and important civic issue. 670 x 15 SPECIAL 57QK Plus Ex. Tax and Recappable Tire TR 2784 West 3500 South humble column and objected to my views. He said that I have no basis for my statements and that all I used was my imagination. Now this brings up a very interesting point. For the past few years I was under the assumption that everything that one read in the newspapers was based on someones vivid' imagination. Facts very seldom enter into the. matter. I thought the least I could do was jump on the band wagon and confuse everyone a little more. Who needs facts? Politicians seem to do very well using their imagination rather than facts. Advertisers get rich on telling the public lies about what their product should do. So why should I be any different and use facts? And I was under the impression that the popular thing to do nowadays was to confuse the public. Have you ever asked yourself why papers are full of stories about fraudulent quiz shows for over a period of months. Why there was such a furor over cancerous agents in cranberries in chickens. Isnt it possible that the reason they keep the pot boiling over stories like this is to set up a smoke screen to hide more important things from the public? Give the people something to read and they are happy. Keep them talking about stupid trivial things and they wont talk about the big issues. Keep them confused and they wont ask questions. But back to the farm program. In 1958 Federal outlays in the form of government payments, export subsidies, and loans to increase storage stocks of farm products were about six million dollars. And no matter how you slice it its a lot of dough. If the six billion dollars were well spent no one would complain. But the sad part of it is that the farm programs did not work. They didnt do any of the things that they set out to do. The soil bank, which a lot of people thought would be the answer to the farm problem, failed. I say that there is something definitely wrong with the farm program when the United States has to spend $150 million on sugar subsidies to countries such as Cuba. I say that theres something fishy when we have a Cavern 'in Missouri in which we can store 70,000,000 pounds of surplus food while thousands of people are starving elsewhere in the world. Theres something wrong with a program that pays a farmer money for NOT raising crops. Isnt this the same as paying a manufacturer for not producing goods, or for paying an employee for NOT work- ing? No one wants to see the farmers of America work for starvation wakes or lose their farms altogether. But lets face it, the politicians got into the farm program and made a sad mess of it. The issues are clouded by political double talk. With all the gibberish going on I doubt if anyone can really get the true facts of the situation. So I hope my friend from the Farm Bureau will forgive me if I havent got all the facts straight. But I have to admit he couldnt refrain from pulling an old political trick. After he accused me of confusing the farm issue even further and insinuating that the money that the government gives to the farmer is justified, he Said, We noticed right next to your article the masthead of Valley View News.
