Show Page 6 The Ute Bulletin Recreation Director Mamed To National Post at Meeting The recreation director for the Ute Tribe was recently elected to head the National Indian Activities Association at a meeting in San Diego, Calif. Rex LaRose was selected at the ' Association's yearly meeting to a two year term as president. old official has been The director of the Ute recreation program since April, 1972. Prior to his employment with the tribe, he was in production control with UteFab Ltd. For four years, LaRose was in merchandizing for WesternElectric in Phoenix. A graduate of Union High School, the new president attended the University of Utah and Arizona State University. In 1966, he was graduated from the Gregg Business College in accounting and management. was LaRose, a Shoshone-Bannocinstrumental in developing NIAA programs. He served on the board of directors in 1973. He sees his new role as let's get down and get things done type of person rather than just a planner. The goal for NIAA under his leadership is the full development of youth programs in all areas. "If we can reach the kids of young enough age, we ' will have stars in the future," he said. We have to utilize heros to. motivate younger kids to excell at an early age, he added. Rex and his wife JoAnn are the parents of three daughters and one son.' V t Basketball The 1974-7Basketball season began with the 2nd Annual Basketball Tournament at the Building. Thirteen teams entered this event with the top four ranked teams in Utah advancing to the semifinals on Friday evening. The Ute Chiefs met the in one 5 Multi-Purpos- e NIAA-sanctione- d BYU-TM- F game with the Spotted Eagles of Springville matched against the Provo Skins. Other teams entered were St. George. Ut., Ignacio, Colorado Chieftains, USU Many Eagles, Richfield Lohos, Ute Tribe Utes, Union Utes, Logan's Loggers, Bucks and Ute Fab. The tournament began on Friday November ?6 and the finals were held Saturday, .November 23. The results were not available at press lime. Boys Basketball The sign up for boys basketball will begin on December 9 and all interested boys are asked to contact their community recreation .leader for details. We will make the team assignments and age groups after the registration. All boys between 8 and 14 will be assigned to a team and we will be stressing fundamentals. Any girls who are physically able may sign up with the boys if they desire. We hope to offer a seperate program if there are enough girls interested. Adult Basketball Leagues Adult basketball teams will be in their leagues beginning December 9 also. All mens and women's teams are asked to be in attendance at a meeting December 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the e building to set up the schedules. Each team may select their own players and if any others are interested we will assign them to a team. scheduled Multi-purpos- Women's Tournament t We will be sponsoring an eight team womens tournament during the Christ mas Holidays and all teams are invited to apply for entrance. We will be selecting 5 or 6 teams from off the reservation to come in and play and two or three local teams will be entered. Applications for entry are due on or before December 18. Football Banquet The Little Chiefs football banquet will be held at the Building on Wednesday, December 11 for all players and their parents. Trophies and awards will be made for the Most Valuable Player, Best Offensive Player and Best Defensive Player and a special award for the most improved player. The team had a fine record with only two lasses and a tie marring their schedule. We hope to have a special guest speaker for the banquet and interested persons may purchase tickets from the Recreation Department after December Multi-purpos- e 6. Job Corps Forms Now Available At Manpower Office Application forms and placement tests for young men and women interested in joining the Job Corps are currently available at the Tribal Manpower office in Fort Duchesne. The federally funded program offers young people between the ages of 16 and 21 an opportunity to earn money while learning a skill .and, if desired, completing thier high school education. On completion of their individual program each student is assisted in job placement by center personnel. Young people interested in learning a skill, finishing school and earning monev while meeting new friends in a campus environment are encouraged to contact Linda Garcia Tribal Manpower Office at Ext. 68. An exciting boxing slate is promised by the Ute Tribe Alcohol and Drug Programs boxing team this weekend when it hosts boxing dubs from Salt Lake City and Ogden at matches in the West Junior High School gym. According to Team Coach Ernie Martinez, the bouts wiH begin at 4 p.m. Nov. 30.' He is arranging a match between Julius Glasker and local favorite Eddie Martinez and a match between Henry Martinez and George Sloane. These boys met in the ring on Nov. 16 at the Northwest Center in Salt Lake City when Eddie outboxed Glasker. Sloane also beat Henry Martinez that evening. Coach Martinez stated, these were rough bloody bouts and real crowd thrillers. Everyone is urged to attend these bouts and cheer our boys on. The boxing club had an active summer and fall. The club partidpated in the boxing card Sept. 3 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. Eddie Martinez won over Alex Clark, of Ogden. Team member George Sloane defeated Lelan Florez of ANTELOPE HEAD TIE HOLDERS -Salt Lake City. Hunt Contest sponsored by the Tribal Fish and Game Department during the state hunt. Mr. Murray entered the longest feather, 24 1316 inches, to win the jackpot. The jackpot of $22 was contributed by the contest's eleven participants. . |
