And yet, here we are, fixated on one shooting in Florida. We're fixated on it because the mainstream media picked up the story, then social media ran wild with it and before long the late Trayvon had his own celebrity endorsements. The sympathizers for both sides have been flocking to their teams, meanwhile ignoring the other 8,999 African Americans gunned down every year because Jay-Z hasn't gotten hot under the collar about them. Just this year, in a three-day span from March 16 to March 19, 41 people were shot and killed in Chicago. It made a few rounds, but it never went big, we never knew why. In fact, it barely even registered. I don't know why it never caught on, but I just hope it wasn't because Twitter was too busy talking about Snookie's pregnancy book. Editor-in-Chief With the school year approaching, we are extremely excited with the work we've done so far this summer and the work we'll be putting into the UVU Review. Our new website is currently in the works with a new design that will appeal to the users visually and is more easily accessible. August 26th is the projected date for its completion but we hope that you visit our website before then to enjoy all of the cool features we currently have Thanks for all of your support! So, USA, I didn't think we'd still be talking about this. It's been more than two weeks since the verdict was handed down in the Zimmerman/Martin case, which was widely publicized across mainstream media. While so many citizens are busy debating whether Andrew Zimmerman got away with murder or Trayvon Martin was a thug, I'm just left here wondering why We The People need our news filtered through pop culture. PLANES – PG August 9th STARING: Val Kilmer, Priyanka Chopra, and Anthony Edwards DIRECTOR: Jeffrey M. Howard ELYSIUM – NOT YET RATED August 9th STARRING: Matt Damon and Jodie Foster DIRECTOR: Niell Blomkamp MUM! MtUlA COORDINAIN I'm just afraid that there's this awful trend where We The People need to be told what to think and how to feel about it; where we're more concerned about looking cool that thinking for ourselves. Facebook slacktivists hashtag their way into the hearts and minds of America, framing the conversation by popularity and perpetuating media manipulation. It's propagated by our culture and spreads through social media. I worry that those trying to be popular are drowning out the voices of those that really care. Are We the People okay with only being compassionate when someone else is watching? So, USA?
