Show r- YOUNG from B1 .- Latter-day Saint. All these personal connections help, but they are not, Young insists, what leads to success on the field. "It really helps on the long road trips that we can all go to church together and have just one more thing that helps us connect on another level," Young said. "But once we step on the field everything goes out the window. We are all united in one goal and that is to win this one game. It all comes down to trust, knowing that the other person will be where they are supposed to and they will execute." Young's arrival was ternpered when she was forced to redshirt as a transfer student her first year. "It was tough," Young said. "Of course you want to be on the field, but at the same time it helped me learn and grow so much. Just being able to watch the plays without the stress of wondering when I would get in the game and how well I was playing." Another big difference in her collegiate experience was the player evaluations of head coach Brent Anderson. "Anderson does not play favorites like other places I've been," Young said. "If you play well you will get a chance. I felt overlooked with my time at Utah, like I wasn't given much of an opportunity to prove myself." Young has taken advantage and benefitted from the confidence Anderson has in her, especially on penalty kicks. "You have to get cocky," Young said. "You get the mindset you will score and she cannot and will not be able to stop the ball." Young feels the team's best asset is speed and that teams are already trying to adapt. "No team in our conference can match up with our speed up front," Young said. rimays 11111kwi' 111111 VIP Clement named Defensive Player of the Week NAPER- to Clement who helped lead VILLE, Ill. the Wolverines to a road vic- -- Utah Valley's Sarah Clement and Houston Baptist's Jasmine Casey have been named Great West Conference Volleyball Players of the Week after outstanding performances last week. The honors were announced Tuesday by the conference office. The defensive award went tory over two-time defending conference champion North Dakota with seven block assists. Clement also averaged 1.75 blocks per set and didn't commit a block error as she helped the Wolverines start their conference season 1-0. The middle blocker from Lindon, Utah, also added eight kills and three digs in the victory over the Fighting Sioux. "They move their defense up to try and draw an offside, so we have to be smart with our speed and take advantage of the extra space that pulling the defense up brings." Young was named the GWC Player of the Week due in large part to her performance against Idaho State. She scored two goals and notched one assist in a 5-1 victory for the Wolverines. During the match an ISU player was severely injured as she challenged a header by Young, whose legal head-butt (the ISU player was charged with a foul) led to some bad blood between the two schools. "I guess I have a target on my back now but I say bring it on," Young said. "If they play overly aggressive, that only helps us as long as we keep our poise." BARBECUE PIT the third time this year, the Utah Valley University men's golf team finished a tournament second or better. Behind three top 12 finishes from freshman Michael Dart (T8), Mason Casper (T12) and Joey Olson (T12), the Wolverines vaulted from fifth place to second at the Firestone Grill Invitational Monday at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club. Dart fired his second 71 of the tournament to finish three-over par to lead the Wolverines in his second college start. "Mike played really solid. It was a great way to start his college career," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curransaid. Casper and Olson carded final-round 72s. Stratton Schulz, who finished tied for 29th, shot a final-round 76, while Andrew Carlin finished tied for 56th. Cal-State Fullerton won the event with a team total of 861, while UVU was second BEHEys BARBECUE PIT for third at 882. "If we could have got off to a better start we might have won the event," Curran said. "It was a tough course and we threw away too many shots around the green." Earlier in the year, the Wolverines won the Battle in the Tetons and finished second at the Palouse Collegiate. WOMEN'S GOLF DAYTON, Nev. -- Utah Valley University had three golfers shot rounds in the 70s Tuesday at the Wolf Pack Classic, and the team finished 10th overall. Sophomore Celeste Gish led the Wolverines with a 76 Tuesday and finished with a 157 to finish in a tie for 31st, while freshman Haley Dunn (81-77) finished in a tie for 36th, and Jordyn Dougal (82-79) tied for 42nd. The defensive honor is Clement's second of the season as she was previously awarded by the conference on Aug. 30. Casey, a freshman from Friendswood, Texas, hit .314 and recorded her second double-double of the season with a career-high 22 kills along with 17 digs in last Thursday's 3-1 victory at NJIT. On Saturday, the outside hitter hit .421 at Chicago State as the Huskies started BOLDT from B1 was irrelevant, getting orange slices and Capri Suns at halftime and going out for pizza afterwards, win or lose. And sometimes ice cream too. This soccer season I have had the chance to expand my horizons and cover soccer nearly exclusively. I have to admit that at first it did feel like watching people running around until the ball found it's way near the goal and, in a rare case, seeing it actually make it to the back of the net. As I stripped away my biases I had accumulated and gave soccer a fair shot, I was blown away by the intricacy and strategy that goes into scoring a goal, playing defense and defending the net as a keeper. These athletes have to be in such superb physical condition that it allows them to pursue other athletic ventures with ease. The training alone demands respect from fans of all sports. UVU forward Natalie Young plays collegiately in both track and soccer but says the training doesn't cut both ways. "It's way easier to move 2-0 on the road in conference play. Others nominated for the offensive award were Julia Colombo (NJIT), Nikki Husfeldt (North Dakota), Ijanae Holman (Texas-Pan American) and Chelsey Heaps (Utah Valley). Defensive nominees included Courtney Whittleman (Houston Baptist) and Taylor Bohannon (North Dakota). into track season from soccer," Young said. "After soccer season you are in such good shape because you are always running and moving. Track is more short distance training so it takes a little bit more to get back in shape for soccer." While some may or may not enjoy the sport to begin with, given time and an open mind soccer can grow on the hardest of hardcore, armchair quarterbacks . After playing many different sports throughout my life, I can honesty say that I have given the least amount of time and attention to soccer. My beef with Fox is that they should proudly air premier league soccer and not have to dress it up as "football" Sunday continued. Soccer is not mutton dressed up as lamb. For many, it's a perfectly seasoned rib-eye hot of the grill. The key for soccer's success in this country is education and exposure. Fox helped neither by implying soccer is a football substitute. Soccer won't take the American Sporting world by storm overnight, but in the famous words of Dr. Leo Marvin: "All it takes is baby steps."
