Show ■ By SHARECE WILCOXON Life Writer oneer Unilike the rest of the states in the union, Utahns have two excuses every July to makes things explode. There's Independence Day, and twenty days later, on July 24 for Pioneer Day. While national pride is prevalent around here, the sense of state pride is a strong rivals. Annual parades, rodeos, fairs and the like are dotted on community event calendars celebrating the en- try of the Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. For those who have attended such celebrations, this chance of encountering the immortal phrase, "this is the right place," spoken by the leader of the pioneering clan, Brigham Young, are high. American culture applauds the valiant, the bold, the trendsetters: the pioneers. Modern-day pioneers abound, but the focus on the rugged, rough and tumble pioneers of the romanticized West still molds modern culture. The emphasis on individu- ality and the lone ranger has a tie to those sometimes unintentional trailblazers. Pioneer day is commemorated on a day centering around a significant event in Mormon history, but it's not limited to a religious celebration. These Mormons epitomized the American dream, ragged and suffering, they stumbled into a valley unknown to them, hoping to escape religious persecution. Holding to that concept of individuality, every city celebrates it differently. Spanish FROM MOVIES B6 or different to set it apart from the first four movies. A group of teens/young adults escape death and then one by one, they all die horrifically. That's the basis of everyone of these movies. No pun intended, but it's been done to death. Verdict: Don't Waste Your Life Fork has aptly named it "Fiesta Days" while Salt Lake City holds to the more traditional "Days of '47." The celebrations have the same foundation, fireworks, food and fun, but the unique traditions of each settled city is remembered and then shared by the born-and-raised locals. Lehi, a small town, even went so far as to include a full-length, original musical that was performed for a few years running. The title song includes "This is Lehi, they followed their hearts to settle this land..." It could be cliché, but the adoring praise of the authors and then of the locals who sing the words are genuine. It ties to that sense of home and belonging felt during this holiday. Pioneer day is not especially commercialized. Instead of seeing appropriately shaped candies and toys for the celebration, it's centered on a sense of community, family and sharing. Farmer's markets are plentiful. The state, together, reminiscences fondly of the days when intrepid adventurers were the norm. The Help Aug. 5 Drama Rated PG-13 Emma Stone stars as a reporter who writes about the lives of the African-American servants, cooks, nannies, maids, etc. in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s. She is helped by Aibileen, played by Academy Award nominated Viola Davis. Based upon a national best seller, The Help has a stunning cast and a solid story. By blending moments of humor with its poignant message, The Help looks charming. Verdict: Go See It 30 Minutes or Less Aug. 12 Action/Adventure, Comedy Not Yet Rated Staring some major comidic hitters of today, 30 Minutes or Less combines an absurd premise with clever reactions. Jesse Eisenberg plays a pizza delivery boy who has a bomb strapped to his chest by Danny McBride. Eisenberg, along with his friend played by Aziz Ansari, have to rob a bank before McBride detonates the bomb. The chemistry between Eisenberg and Ansari is delightful and whenever McBride is on screen, he obviously steals the scene. Verdict: Go See It 5 Days of War Aug. 19 Action/Adventure, Drama Rated R Based upon real events, 5 Days of War follows journalists who covered the war between Georgia and Russia in 2008, a conflict that only last 5 days. The film combines the terror and grit of war with the frustration of a world that doesn't seem to notice the suffering. Political without taking sides, 5 Days of War is a poignant message of what people will do to expose the truth. Verdict: Go See It Conan the Barbarian Aug. 19 Action/Adventure Rated R Heavy on gratuitous action, light on story, Conan the Barbarian looks cool but don't bother trying to find a cohesive plot. I'll save you the time: there is none. Verdict: Don't Waste Your Life. CONNER ALLEN/UVU REVIEW Danica Olsen smiles at the audience before answering her on-stage interview question.Atur? Life Editor Obtaining a UV ID card is more than just getting another piece of plastic to carry around in your wallet. There are several benefits that students can take advantage of right here on campus. Although a UV ID is required to schedule a session in the library study rooms, it can be used to as a pseudobus pass, as well. Another benefit is the Greenbucks feature, which allows students to put money into an account and use the UV ID for on-campus transactions. As part of the Greenbucks feature, the Gold Plan can be used specifically for purchasing food on campus. "The Gold Plan is basically a meal plan, and you can purchase food from any vendor on campus with the ID card," said Michael Cox, Campus Connection. "At the end of the semester, any left over money gets transferred to a Flex Bucket, and can be used to buy anything on campus. It also carries over into the next semester." Cox explained if a student were to reinstate the Gold Plan for the next semester, he or she would have to deposit enough money to bring the Flex Bucket amount back up to $300. The UV ID can also be upgraded to the UV PlusCard, which is used as a debit card for students with accounts at Utah Community Credit Union. ID's are available at the Campus Connection kiosk in the Student Center. 0610-01010100 00100 Written by Kelly Cannon, a self-proclaimed cinephile, Cannonized Cinema will cover everything within the world of film.
