Moderated by Parker Donat via @UVUreview. uvureview UVUReview 11 Pk 71- T #UVU Review is starting the first #uvunewschat REVIEW in a few moments! nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Let's get started!! @mjkushin is Assistant Professor for the Communication Department at #UVU and @jillakaufusi is a #UVU grad. Question 1: Why do you think it's important for UVU students to be active in social media? #uvunewschat mjkushin Matthew Kushin From a career standpoint, social media is becoming a focal point in many communication professions. I would add that skills and what is sought after will always change. If you can learn SM today you show you can adapt. #uvunewschat jillakaufusi Jill K We need to be on top of our game when entering the career field, and social media knowledge is in high demand right now. It is better to show that we have hands-on experience while IN school, rather than trying to learn it all later. #uvunewschat nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Second question: What are some important tips for people starting out on social media? #uvunewschat jillakaufusi Jill K UVU students need to be more involved in social media. I'm happy to hear @mjkushin is teaching a social media class now. Be active, be honest and be professional. Don't tweet anything you wouldn't want a potential employer to see. #uvunewschat mjkushin Matthew Kushin I'd highlight 2 important things. In starting out, I think everything comes with experience amd time. So take your time, learn the culture, and don't be overwhelmed. Second, the most important thing is to realize the potential for professional purposes. Making connections by social media for careers seems hard for some students. But in last few years, many more students seem to see how it is impacting businesses and organizations. Realizing Facebook, etc., is not just for personal relationships is first and foremost. From there, we can start learning how to use it more in more professional ways..#uvunewschat nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Good points! I've found that it has come in handy as far as making connections for my future. #uvunewschat nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins @mjkushin and @jillakaufusi question 3. What is your take on Google+? #uvunewschat jillakaufusi Jill K I would love to know more about analytics and effective online business practices #uvunewschat mjkushin Matthew Kushin At first glimpse, it is a copy of Facebook. However, I think there are key productivity features that workers will like. For example, conference video will allow people to easily collaborate. I think Google will roll out more features like this, and that's how they'll differentiate themselves. But right now it is very limited. While the `circles' feature is an advantage now, I'm sure facebook will soon copy it. In sum, if G+ can appeal to the "working world" with collaborative work features they may have an advantage because many. Already use google products like Docs, calendar, etc. What better than to integrate all those cool features into 1 site? mjkushin Matthew Kushin We'll talk "theory" first - concepts, etc. Then get into a lot of hands on stuff working in teams. 1 unit will cover: Social Data: Basic Brand Monitoring, Trending, Analyzing your Data, Search Optimization. We'll also look at things like: Online Discussion: Promoting & Covering Events via Social Media. Talk about crowdsourcing and do an experiment with that And the last thing I'd mention is, students will have to do some personal branding jillakaufusi Jill K @mjkushin I'm so happy you'll be doing this class.will be very beneficial for students. Will it be required for some majors? #uvunewschat nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Question 4: What is your favorite social media platform? and why? @jillakaufusi #uvunewschat mjkushin Matthew Kushin @jillakaufusi Presently, it is a 350R elective. With any luck, I can make it a full time course. I don't know that it can be required. #uvunewschat mjkushin Matthew Kushin I'm addicted to Facebook.:) It is how I stay connected with friends and family. #uvunewschat nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Question 7: Where can professors and students go to learn more about the use of social media? #uvunewschat jillakaufusi Jill K I like Twitter the most. For me, it's easy to follow topics that interest me and to network with people & businesses. #uvunewschat jillakaufusi Jill K There are tons of social media "experts" that post good info online. I say mashable.com again. #uvunewschat nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Question 5: Speaking of following people, who should students be following or "liking"? #uvunewschat mjkushin Matthew Kushin Generally, whether on Twitter or via RSS, I'd follow @mashable @techcrunch -- there are so many news sources. Professors: @profhacker and http://chronicle.com/blogs/wiredcampus/ . I really think its viral. Start with 1 and see where it leads you. Explore who they follow. mjkushin Matthew Kushin That depends on their interests. Find brands, organizations, thought leaders and professors. That post in your area of interest, and watch them to see what they post. See how they behave on social media. It'll do a few things. It'll expose you to other news in your area (say, PR), and it'll allow you to learn by observation. nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Question 6: What kinds of things will you be teaching in your social media class in the Fall? @jillakaufusi What would you want to learn? #uvunewschat V REVIEW nessarose7 Vanessa Perkins Great advice!
