Baird blast leads to Owlz win :<-:TYS0N CAMP >!-Sports writer < After resting his ailring body for three games, :the All-Star first baseman • returned to the Orem Owlz lineup and hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Owlz fought back to edge past the Ogden Raptors at Brent Brown Ballpark on Sept. 8. "It's an awesome feeling," Baird said of his late-game heroics. "That was the first walk-off homer I've ever had." The victory was the first in a two-game home stand for the Owlz, who own the Pioneer League's best record at 49-24. The Raptors, meanwhile, fall to 41-32. "- But things got off to an inauspicious start for the hometown Owlz. Ogden center fielder Lenell McGee started things off with a Ieadoff triple off the left field wall. The next batter, Austin Yount, who is the nephew of former Major League great Robin Yount, grounded into a fielder's choice that brought McGee home to give the Raptors an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, JT Wise hit a monster shot way over the left field fence to extend Ogden's lead to 2-0. The Raptors poured it on again in the next inning by scoring four runs, thanks in part to Pedro Guerrero's tworun single, and Ogden took a 6-0 lead heading into the latter part of the third inning. But Orem answered back by scoring four runs of its own in the third inning. After a wild pitch by Ogden pitcher Brett Wallach that scored Orem's Kevin Ramos, third baseman Casey Haerther hit a line drive to the center field fence for a two-run double. Next up was Terrell Alliman, who knocked Haerther home, and the Owlz trailed by a score of 6-4. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Owlz catcher Carlos Ramirez singled on a line drive to score Ramos to bring Orem within one run. The Owlz struck again in the seventh inning when Haerther singled on a ground ball that brought Ramirez home for the game-tying run and set the stage for Baird's game-winner in the bottom of the ninth. Bairdfinishedthe day going 2-for-3 with a double to go along with his homer, while Haerther went 2-for4 with a double and three RBIs. The comeback victory was something that has become typical of this Owlz squad this season. "We've done that a lot this year," Baird added. "We know if we're down early, it's not over because we can score runs in bunches." Jonathan Garrett picked up his fifth win for the Owlz, while Nick Gaudi suffered his fourth loss on the year for Ogden. FINAL SCORE As the clock ticked to zero in Boise State's win over the Oregon Ducks on the opening night of the college football season, tempers began to Hair. Atoa was pleased with the Wolverines performance in the Invitational but also said, "For sure I would've wanted to get more wins but we accomplished our goal coming into this weekend. I thought the girls fought hard and we gave ourselves opportunities. We just fell short." Sloan, Stockton land in Hall of Fame MATT BEAUDIN Sports editor As football, both college and the NFL, dominates the headlines this week, it's important that we take a minute to salute two Utah legends who received their due diligence this last week. Former Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton and current Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan were inducted into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass, along with Michael Jordan and David Robinson. The wiry point guard from Spokane, Wash, needs no introduction to Utah Jazz fans. His NBA career spanned nearly 20 years, all of which came in Salt Lake City. Teaming up with fellow Jazzman and future Hall of Famer Karl Malone, Stockton piled up 15,806 assists, enough to place him as the all-time assist leader. As if that wasn't enough to solidify his spot in Springfield, he is also the all-time NBA leader in steals with 3,265. With his short shorts and big heart Stockton led Utah to the finals in back-to-back-years, 1997 and 1998, and was a 10-time NBA All-Star. Jazz fans across the state will also never forget his threepoint shot over Charles Barkley and the Houston Rockets that sent his team to the NBA Finals for the first time in its history. Heading into the Hall of Fame along side Stockton will be his coach and mentor, Jerry Sloan. In stints with the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz, Sloan has won over 1,000 games and counting. He led the Jazz to 15 straight playoff appearances including the finals twice. He is also the longest tenured coach in all of professional sports as he heads into his 22nd year with the Jazz. Sloan also had a productive playing career with the Bulls. As a tough hardnosed player, Sloan carried his toughness with him, as • he became a coach. Malone, who also spent the majority of his career playing under Sloan, will join the two Jazz legends as soon as he becomes eligible for the honor. Use your BACKPACK instead of plastic shopping bags.
