Show Toolson to Play for Sacramento Kings Summer League Team Former Utah Valley University guard Ryan Toolson accepted an invitation to play for the Sacramento Kings' summer league team and will participate in the Las Vegas Summer League July 10-19. "Ryan is an NBA prospect if he's given the opportunity," said UVU basketball coach Dick Hunsaker. "With the Kings 1 hope he will be able to find his comfort zone and show what he is capable of in the summer league against NBA-caliber competition." Toolson, Utah Valley's all-time leading scorer will begin his professional career with the same organization that former teammate and NBA free-agent Ronnie Price did in 2005. Price played for the Utah Jazz the last two seasons. Along with being the Wolverines' all-time leading scorer, Toolson garnered the top free-throw shooting percentage in the nation in each of the last three seasons at 97.0 percent, 95.1 percent and 92.7 percent, respectively. In addition to his foul shooting mark this season, Toolson's 63-point effort in Utah Valley's 123-121 quadruple-overtime victory over Chicago State was an NCAA single-game season- high in 2008-09. Also, Toolson, a member of the 2008-09 AllIndependent First Team, ranked eighth in the nation in scoring at 23.8 points while starting all 28 games for the Wolverines. He finished his career ranked second behind Price (22.2 ppg) in career scoring average at 19.1 ppg. Toolson holds a total of 12 career school records: points scored (2,163), games played (113), kainutes played (3,644), ;field goals made (677), :field goals attempted (1 fil 1), free throws attempted (526), assists (282), tfireepoint field goals attempted (730), three-point jjfield goals made (315), tjireepoint field goal percentage (43.2 percent), and ^freethrows made (494), career free throw percentage percent). They have sat in the stadium as the evening sun ducks behind the stands night after night and witnessed the Owlz grind their way to Pioneer League championships. However, in the Owlz first home stand of the season, the potential Anaheim Angels dropped two games in a row to the Idaho Falls Chukars with poor offensive production and dismal fielding to blame. A scene shift and a date with the Ogden Raptors seemed to be just what the Owlz needed to • bust their slump. The Owlz broke out their bats in game one of a two game trip to Ogden with a 9-5 win overthe lowly Raptors. Behind Buddy Boshers five innings of work the Owlz scored nine runs, the most they have brought across the plate so far this season. Every player recorded at least one hit and seven different players scored at least one run. Jon Karcich finished three-forthree with two doubles and three runs scored. The offensive explosion for Orem will hopefully travel with the Owlz as they return home for an extended home stand in which the Billings Mustangs and Great Falls Voyagers come to town. The matchup with the Voyagers will set up a rematch from last seasons Pioneer League championship series that saw the Voyagers win the title over the Owlz in the third and deciding game. Draper named rodeo RSL scores shutout victory over Toronto coach of the year Sports writer The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association recently named former Brookside Elementary teacher Shane Draper Rocky Mountain Region Rodeo Coach of the Year. Draper, who traded in his math and science teaching hat last year for a cowboy hat, is now head coach of the UVU Rodeo team. At the National College Finals Rodeo (NCFR) in June, Draper was honored for his coaching skills among coaches from throughout the Rocky Mountain Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association that comprises college and university teams from throughout Utah and Idaho. Of his work at Brookside, Draper said, "1 really miss the kids and being in the classroom, and sometimes I still can't believe I'm not teaching." But according to Draper, the only job I could enjoy equally as well is to be able to coach rodeo full time. And according to his father, Lee Draper, "For throwing his hat in the ring, he found a job that suits him perfectly." Draper was born and raised in Genola, Utah, where he is raising his own young family near the home he grew up in with parents Lee and Debbie Draper. Shane graduated from Payson High School where he began his career as a rodeo cowboy. As a teenager, Shane qualified for the UHSRA (Utah High School Rodeo Association) & NHSRA (National High School Rodeo Association). While attending UVU, he competed in the NCFR and the Wilderness Circuit Finals in Saddle Bronc Riding. From 1998 to 2000, he was chosen as the Rocky Mountain Region Student Director for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) and later went on to compete in the professional arena of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys of America. KIRffTERRY Sports writer RSL took on Toronto FC at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday June 27, and came away with a 3-0 win with goals from Yura Movsisyan, Kyle Beckerman, and Clint Mathis. RSL had their work cut out for them right from the beginning. In only the second minute Toronto was given their first corner kick creating a chance for them to score first but failed. For nearly 20 minutes RSL struggled to get a chance at a goal until Movsisyan got away from Toronto and charged towards the penalty area. With no one around Movsisyan, except Toronto's keeper, he simply chipped the ball up and into the corner of the net giving RSL the first goal of the game. Javier Morales, Movsisyan, and Beckerman had another chance at a goal 13 minutes later but Toronto's keeper stopped the ball from entering the net. Nine minutes later Beckerman took a shot from 10 yards out, thanks to teammates Mathis and Morales assisting, to give RSL a 2-0 lead just one minute before the half. RSL struggled again in the second half searching for opportunities to score, as Toronto was strong enough to keep holding them at two. In the 73rd minute Morales was taken down in a tackle giving RSL fans a scare as he was carried off the field on a stretcher. Morales was back on his feet in minutes walking off the small injury to his ankle. With only 12 minutes to play Mathis right-footed the ball into the corner of the net giving RSL a 3-0 win over Toronto. RSL will take on Club America on Saturday July lith at Rio Tinto Stadium and then will go on the road to take on Columbus Crew on Saturday July 18. |
