Local actor booked on theft charges Actor in LDS-targeted movies charged with theft of a laptop from UVU Jack Waters • Editor-in-chief Local actorMichael Birkeland, who has appeared many times in LDS-targeted movies, was arrested on charges stemming from the theft of a laptop from a UVU art instructor. Birkeland, 36, who has appeared in locally filmed movies such as "The Singles Ward," "Church Ball" and "The Home Teachers," was booked into the Utah County Jail on Fri. July II on one count of felony theft. He posted $3,000 bail on Mon. July 14. The MacBook Pro laptop was reported stolen in April, and police had been trying to catch up with the suspect since then. According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Provo's 4th District Court, Birkeland attended an art class at UVU April 3 as the guest of a class model. While visiting the class, Birkeland was seen using an instrucSee THEFT '• A2 When former President Sederburg accepted his new position as the seventh commissioner of higher education for the state of Utah, the search for an interim president began. The Board of Regents appointed Liz Hitch, who will assume her new duties on Aug. 18. Hitch was the vice president of academic affairs. She has been with UVU since July 1, 2007, and has over 35 years of experience in higher education. She also has experience from an eight-month stint as interim chancellor at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. "Dr. Hitch is the logical fit for this position at this critical juncture in the institution's history," said Sederburg in a press release. "She has vast experience building graduate programs and already has experience serving in a presidential role. I look forward to working with her in this capacity." Hitch has a vision of UVU continuing to serve the community as an engaged learning institution. She believes that UVU will attract a number of candidates to be considered 'for the president position. "At UVU, we Amie Wells Assistant News editor • The UVU Student Association (UVUSA) will be hosting a summer barbecue to encourage student involvement on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Digital Learning Center Courtyard. In* addition to live music and dancing, the food will be catered by Smokehouse BBQ. "The barbecue is intended to be a welcoming function to gel students pumped up for the new school year." said Kyle Brown, vice president of clubs. Booths will be set up for each student government committee, so students can learn how they can make the most of their university experience by becoming involved in UVUSA. 'This is our first year as UVUSA and we are having a huge influx of incoming UVUSA committee members," said Joseph Watkins, student body president. "This barbecue is a way to get more students involved" UVUSA encourages students to take advantage of all of the exciting leadership opportunities available, whether it is becoming involved with a club, committee or just supporting campus events. The UVUSA Summer BBQ is not limited to those interested in participating in Student Government; all current and future students are welcome to attend. As a solution to the need of on-campus housing, the REC program will create a partnership between UVU and nearby apartment complexes. RECs will be a cross between resident assistants and mentors for the students living within their area. Other apartments around campus will be participating as well. c • This fall, students have the opportunity to take a class based off the history of Yellowstone National Park. Even though the name of the class is "the Yellowstone country," according to David Wilson, the instructor, it will include most of eastern Wyoming and eastern Montana. Students will be able to learn about the history that has occurred at these locations. Wilson says the class will cover everything "from mountain men to Custer at the Little Big Horn to the Cattle Kingdom to the era of gold mining."
