Matt Beaudin r ] Green Bay Packer legend Brett Favre, who retired earlier this year, has reportedly been interested in returning to play again in the NFL. While Favre spent most of his career, and won a Super Bowl with the Fackers, it appears he will be headed to another franchise if he indeed decides to play in 2008. The Packers, who are trying to move forward without their hall-of-fame quarterback, are expecting to start backup Aaron Rogers out of Cal. Tour de France Every July the best cyclists in the world compete in the Tour de France, the most illustrious race in the world. After chasing down a perfect length-of-the-field pass, forward Robbie Findley drew Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad out of the box, setting Beckerman up with an empty-net shot off Findley's pass. However, just as has been the case all season, Beckerman's shot went through Onstad's legs towards the net only to be denied by Houston's Bobby Boswell at the last second. Call it close or unlucky, but it's still not getting the job done. Through RSL's 10 home games this season, coach Jason Kries' team has outplayed every opponent that has stepped onto the field, but Salt Lake's inability to finish teams off has hurt them in the win column. "All our ties have happened when we've been the W-< Dave iba/ UVU Review Midfielder Kyle Beckerman chases down a lose ball against the Kansas City Wizards. Despite the missteps along the way, Real was sitting pretty, tied for second in the Western Conference coming into Thursday night's game. After a scoreless first half. Real Salt Lake unleashed a barrage of shots early in the second 45, but still could not find the back of the net. Findley fired a shot from distance that sailed wide, while Kenny Deuchar's header of a corner nearly found its way through the pipes. Unfortunately for RSL, another tie keeps Salt Lake out of first place once again. In the closing minutes of the game, RSL's Chris Wingert was rewarded a red card after an altercation ensued. Not long'after, the ref blew the whistle to finish the game though it appeared stoppage time was still left on the clock. "I give my team an enormous amount of credit. They were passionate tonight," said Real coach Jason Kries. "I thought the atmosphere everything was spectacular tonight except the referees." Remaining in second •place in the Western Conference with the tie, RSL will try once again to make the jump to the top of the conference for the first time in team history. Owlz continue winning ways Tony Gunderson P~] Sports writer July 26-27 vs. Idaho Falls Chuckers 7:05 p.m., 4:05 p.m. •i^B Sports editor "~' The Orem Owlz came out with a rough start in their seven-game series at home. The Owlz, who have proved to be quite a firstand second-inning team kicked off the game against Great Falls 2-0 within the first few innings but, let down and never saw the lead again after the fourth. Orem fell 7-3. However, that wasn't a downer for the Owlz, since they answered back in the second game with a 2-1 victory over Great Falls. The defense took an obvious step forward, and some im- pressive stats from the team helped solidify the victory. Robert Lopez pounded an RBI single in the first inning of the game, putting him on a 21-game hitting streak. "I am trying to stay consistent day in and day out," Lopez said. "I am not trying to do too much." And consistent he has been. With that win it gives the Owlz their 16th win of the season. It came down to pitcher Reyes Dorado, who saved the game by allowing only one hit in the 9th. Among the nail biters lately is the rally against the Idaho Falls Chukers last week. The all too familiar pattern of taking the quick lead must have caught up to them. Orem led the game 4-0 in the first inning. In fact, it wasn't until after the 8-1 lead in the seventh inning was over that things got interesting. An RBI triple by the Chukers followed by a three-run home run put the Chukers within one in a matter of minutes. However, the Owlz ended the scare-9-8, again with superb pitching. The Owlz will start their seven-game series away from Brent Brown Ball Park beginning July 16 against Great Falls, and they will finish with the Billings Mustangs. Mark Johnston/LJVU Review As has been tradition, the Orem Owlz are sitting atop (he pioneer league as they look to repeat as champions. UVU B00KST0R Your College. Your Needs.
