Show MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2008 Life • THE COLLEGE TIMES B5 Part two: Awfully lovely Strolling downtown S The band weighs in on their new record Old Man Winter cant stop art Chad Hunt Greg Wilcox & Lindsay Johnson Life writers It may have been freezing outside last Friday night, but that didn't stop local artist Jason Metcalf from displaying his unique art at The Mode Boutique. Metcalf, along with other local artists, shrugged off the cold temperatures to light the local art scene ablaze in downtown Provo. The Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll takes place the first Friday night of every month at participating venues, including Coal Umbrella, Mode Boutique, Muse Music and a number of art galleries. The businesses keep their doors open from 6 to 9 p.m. while art appreciators stroll from shop to shop, mingling with up-and-coming artists and supporting local businesses. The art on display is decidedly contemporary. in its focus, breaking away from the norm and appealing to a younger audience. Displaying art at the Mode Boutique, this was Ja- son's first solo show in the area. A.look at his artwork reveals a clearly intuitive artist, displaying images of the subconscious. His work seeks to "search for symbols, as well as visual culture specific to my locale, which is presently in the Utah area, but often search for .the connections and shared meanings these symbols have with other contemporary cultures as well as past cultures," Metcalf said. Jason's 2-D work featured intriguing designs and city themes that beg to stand aside Stanley Donwood's pieces as an image on a Radiohcad album. Down the street, Muse Music also displayed artwork. This artist's work was an impressive array of detailed caricature pieces of celebrities such as Thorn Yorke, Tim Burton, and Jimi Hendrix. Coal Umbrella featured artist Byron Stout. His work was best described by an information slide next to one of his paintings, which described him as being more of a feeler than a thinker - and cy Johnson / College Times Assistant Life writer suggested that while his art may startle some, that is desirable, he would probably be doing something wrong. Stout's painting of a giant skull looming on a map of a deserted Utah illustrated this point well. His other paintings were much'more simple in nature, reminiscent in theme to the paintings of Norman Rockwell. A few of these included a painting of a waffle house joint and one of a car driving in the night on a road surrounded by trees. Munching on free cookies and looking at the talent of local artists is a gratifying experience for many culturally thirsty people in Utah County. In fact, all sincere artists in the area are encouraged to get involved in the Downtown Provo Art Stroll, as it is an inclusive event for the whole community. "All artists should be considered on the same ground. Some make belter artwork than others, but it is for each individual viewer to decide on that," Metcalf staled. All said and done, the diversity and quality of the art displayed at the event was enough to outweigh the cold for those who made it out. For ihn-*c who missed the Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll, the artists' work will continue to be displayed throughout the month of February. New artists arc showcased each month, so be sure to check it out. For more information, check out www.downtownprovo.org and click on "Public Arts Program." Last week. The College Times reviewed You're Awful, I Love You, the upcoming album from St. Louis rock band Ludo. As part two of The College Times' review on this new release, we called Tim Convy (Moog/keys) of the band and got his perspective on the new Ludo record. CT: Was there a specific concept to You're Awful, / Love You'.'' If so, what'? Tim: Not really. Our last record. Broken Bride. was a rock opera and told a story, but when we recorded (You're Awful) we tried to lie our songs together. There are a lot of stories, characters and themes that do come up though. CT: Do you think the album is going to be well received? Tim: Yeah. I think it's a new combination oi' the stuff we did on the lirst re- ON "also rans." This group included the likes of Dennis Kucinieh, Joe Biden and Fred Thompson. His opinions on the elections came out a little in the question and answer . session following his initial presentation. He declared he would cast his vote for Ruben Studdard of American Idol fame. He commented that Romney reminded him of Transformers: "Mitt Romney, pro-choice in disguise." Out of all ihe candidates, he would least want to gel in a fight with Hillary Clinton. And most importantly, on the issue of a national health care system, he said. "I think we should all be given Flinlstone vitamins for free." But his frue opinions blossomed after the show CD Vie Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Medium Rare-Who knew this one-hit wonder was still J • , around? Simple Plan: Simple Plan - One guy said,'I've got a simple plan: Let's title the album Simple Plan!' should have jammed more Ludo on there. It also could have used more keys... CT: Where is the band going to go from here, will you take a new direction on the next album? Tim: For now the focus is on this record - getting it out. We have new ideas every day on what we'll do next. I'd be surprised if it isn't a straight rock record, but it won't be for a while. Our goal is to do this for a long time. So there it is, straight from Ludo's Tim Convy, what to expect from the band's new record, You're Awful, / Love You. Island Records St. Louis' ludo. ROCCAfrom Bl Locals take part in the.Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll at the Mode Boutique. NEW cord and new stuff we've nevertried before. Hopefully we'll pull in some new people, too. CT: What song is your favorite from You1 re Awful? Why? Tim: 1 like "Love Me Dead" the most. It's the first song and the first single off the new record. I like different songs for different reasons, but ("Love Me Dead") sums up the feeling of the record. It's not a conventional song you hear on the radio. CT: How do you think this record compares to your previous work? Tim: We've grown more musically, like I hope we do with each record. (You're Awful) is more ambitious, we learned strengths and weaknesses and who does what well. It's more modern, musically ambitious, and better all around. CT: Would you say the new album has any weaknesses' What are they? Tim: That's hard. I don't know that I've never thought of that. I'd say it should be longer, and we Michael Jackson: 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THRILLER Children of the world, don't be tricked bythis...man? Chad Hunt / College Times Mo Rocca cheeses for The College Times. was. over. Rocca talked about his fascination with the current Democratic race, saying, "If Hillary were to beat Obama, it would be the most unHollywood ending. That's not .supposed to happen - like if you're watching movies like Hoosiers or Rudy, what's supposed to happen is Obama's supposed to beat Hillary now ... because his story is so great." Once the show was all said and done, Rocca set up shop out in the hall of the Events Center where his book All The President's Pets was for sale. He spent time signing copies of the book, as well as chatting with students and community members about a variety of different topics. Following his visit to Utah, which he mentioned was spurred by "a real hankering for locusts," Rocca was set to head back up to New York, where he would be working on stories for NPR, telling his quirky stories about the little things that really interest people. "I like being able to tell stories that hopefully are humorous and interesting in their own right, that don't rely on making fun of the conventions of news stories." classifieds REM UTAH is looking for caring people to assist adults with disabilities in the Provo area.
