"Family is good; the girls are good, and it's hard to be away from them right now, and I try not to do it too much/' Obama said, and added, "but we are doing this for them." She continued with urging supporters to back her husband in this significant election by assuring them of his ability to diminish poverty and improve health care, public education and international policy. "When you look at me, I don't want you to see the next first lady. I want you to see the product of public education," said Obama, praising outstanding teachers and her working-class parents, who sacrificed to send her to Princeton. ROMNEY from Al Obama said that she and her husband both come from working-class families and have strong Midwest values like many Americans. She said many parents in this country are trying to provide for their families but are coming up short. "Barack gets it," Obama said. "He understands that our greatest challenge is not that we are suffering from a lack of resources but that we are suffering from a deficit of policy and plans. This is our greatest challenge, right here, right now." "If you want to see something that needs to be changed, I look at Iraq and call that exhibit A," she said, describing Barack as a proponent of change. Explaining that Barack has never supported the war, she continued, "He is the only one that can help us heal." In recent years, this administration has caused divisions in this great country, and, as a result, people have become cynical of the government, she said. "We were fearful and angry as a nation, and our leadership played on those fears," Obama said. "Our troops are stuggling over there, and our leadership has told us to keep shopping." Mrs. Obama's visit to Utah may have contributed to her husband receiving 14 of Utah's 23 Democratic delegates, leaving former First Lady Hillary Clinton with only 9. in thanking those that advocated for him in his efforts to attain the GOP nomination, crediting his supporters with his success. "I entered this race because I love America... America must always remain, as it has always been, the hope of the Earth." Over the course of 2007, Romney spent a reported $37.5 million of his own in support of his campaign. In 2008, Romney is estimated to have spent even more. The remaining contenders for the GOP nomination are Sen. John McCain, Mike Huckabee, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said in his speech to the CPAC that same day that he and Romney had spoken on the phone, "we agreed the importance to unite our party." While Romney landed votes from those considering themselves 'very conservative;1 McCain got votes from the more broad category of moderate voters. McCain is now being seen as the rrontrunner for the Republican Party, with wins in dominant states backing him. With this surge of momentum, speculation over McCain's presidential candidacy eligibility has become, a new issue for the Senator to address. Section 1 of Article II in the Constitution states "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States at the time of the Adoption of this constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President." McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936. The Panama Canal Zone was under US sovereignty from the time period 1903-1979. Although in theory this would take McCain out of the race, many parts of the world, including the Panama Canal, have a law that would apply to McCain, and his birth there. According to this Law, 8 USC 1403, "Any person born in the Canal Zone on or after February 26,1904, and whether before or after the effective date of this chapter, whose father or mother or both at the time of the birth of such person was or is a citizen of the United States, is declared to be a citizen of the United States." For the time being McCain is clear to pursue the presidency of the United States, and with Romney out of the running, the only obstacles in his path seem to be the Democratic contenders, winning the conservative vote, and breaking the pattern of a nation voting in the opposite party after having an unpopular president in office. |
