Show I A5 MONDAY* JULY 30-2007 The Simpsons: back on top Catch America's favorite family on the big screen ^ LukeHickman %' Life editor After 18 years of watching the animated family on a television set, the Simpsons have finaJly made it to the big screen. And while the last few seasons might make it difficult to believe, Vie Simpsons Movie will make you laugh constantly from beginning to end. At this point in the article, I would normally give away small details about the plot, but as any Simpsons fan knows, the plot is rarely what makes their aU-too-farailiar dysfunctional family the charming entertainment it has nearly always been. With many of the writers from the previous 18 seasons returning for the family's first feature-length movie, the jokes and gags have been polished to perfection. Several of the jokes remind you that you've just paid to see something that you can see for free on TV; others make fun of taking the series to t h e big screen, or even Walt Disney for their lame use of animation. But the majority of the gags are witty, top-oftheir-humor jokes that rely specifically on that individual moment, the kind of jokes that you remember when the Simpsons were still in their prime. It's obvious that Fox took the humor beyond the borders that television has permitted them by stretching their humor a bit more toward adults. There's a little cartoon nudity (nothing grave), a couple middle fingers, and some curses you might not hear in prime time (again, nothing grave), some of which will catch you off guard and make it even funnier. The Simpsons Movie is everything that any fan could desire from the Simpsons in a PG-13 movie. If Fox announced tomorrow that there would never be another new episode of The Simpsons, I'd say that the movie was a perfect finish, showing them at the very top of their original, classic game. rottentomatoes.com Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) busts a move in Hairspray. Hairspray remake gels Vibrant musical rambunctiously dances onto the big screen Jason Pyles Life writer There are three things that you should know about Hairspray: It's a musical; John Travolta dresses in drag; and believe it or not, it's surprisingly good. Hairspray is a significant movie. Why? Its leading lady isn't Hollywood's typical, pencil-thin actress. Newcomer Nikki Blonsky plays Tracy Turnblad, and she has just as much onscreen charisma as Jessica Biel... well, almost as much. Unfortunately, Hair- spray disappointingly resorts to plenty of fat jokes but still (not-so-disappointingly) includes Michelle Pfeiffer, just in case. It's 1962 in Baltimore and the Civil Rights Movement is well underway. Even so, segregation prevails over integration, especially on television. The Corny Collins Show, a local, teenage, dance TV program, is all the rage for after-school audiences. The show's dance cast is all white — except when it's "Negro Day," and the host and dancers are all black. Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) is one of the show's biggest fans. One day, when the program's dance team has an opening, Tracy decides to audition. We follow her adventures as she attempts to dance her way onto the program and integrate black and white dancers on television. Hairspray is truly funny, energetic and entertaining. Above all, it's a happy, feel-good movie. As characters in musicals typically do, this cast spontaneously breaks into song for 15 catchy show tunes. There are two downsides to being a movie critic: bad movies and having to knowingly subject myself to bad movies. I mistakenly thought Hairspray would qualify to afflict me with both, but I can warmly recommend this movie. Besides, how many flicks have John Travolta and Christopher Walken dancing around onscreen together like they're in love? But then, I guess / Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry (which is also in theaters) has Adam Sandier and Kevin James doing the same thing. Things sure have changed since 1962. ^ Life-saving products. Being an optimist, Dieter's influence over the despairing men was mocked at first, but soon became infectious and hope inspiring as theothers began participating in helping plan their escape. Though the theme and setting sounds depressing and grim, Rescue Dawn's tone cannot be confined to those parameters. Though there are some uncomfortably sad scenes, there are even more bright and hopeful ones, scenes that are simply dialogue between the men that feels as natural, innocent and humorous as that you'd have with your own close friends. The overall feeling you'll experience is one of extreme joy and happiness. Legendary German director Werner Herzog makes this film feel and look the way it might have if it were made and released during the Vietnam War. As far as I know, there are no CG special effects, and, though it feels very "old school," that element causes you to feel as if you've been thrust into the horrific situation with the characters. Though Rescue Dawn is not going to be a film that everyone remembers all the time, it definitely will not be forgotten. The performances are just as perfect as the movie, and both had better prove to be Oscar-worthy next year. With a PG-13 rating, this is a film for just about all audiences, with the exception of young children, because of its very mild depiction of what were unquestionably R-rated events. See it; you won't be disappointed. Will collect, process and pad donor samples, complete all necessary documentation, ensure regulatory compliance and quarantine any useless products.
