Show opinion/ PAGE A4 MONDAY'JULY 18*2005 letter/ our per/pecliye More thoughts on academic freedom and the moral direction of UVSC Dear Editor, Dear Editor, I have only been following the "conversation" between Mr. Nielsen and Mr. Ditzler for a few weeks now, but it seems to me that I have missed something among the many sentences written. That is, I think that I have missed... the point. I respect that these two are passionate regarding their issues, but what are these "issues?" It seems to me that the issues do not reside in the well being of the student body, but in their personal ideology. I do not see how either the left or the right side of the student body, administration, or faculty, when speaking their political beliefs has harmed a single student or violated anyone's constitutional or for that matter human rights. I am supportive of the community surrounding this college, and am encouraged when they are involved with the programs, academics and social activities of this institution, but I do want to address a concern I have with the idea of whose college this belongs to. I believe that it belongs to the state of Utah, and with that must allow contributions from all peoples and populations involved in it. As students, I hope that our community doesn't think so little of us as to believe that we are being herded by professors and student organizations into voicing positions of either the right or the left. Both sides speak from their heart and are encouraged to do so by these two professionals engaged in the conversation. I just hope that this conversation is in regards to some violation or resolves in a specific way to enhance learning for the students that attend UVSC, or else it is simply mud-slinging. I'm now unable to contain the outrage engendered by Norman Nielsen's comments. I overlook the patronizing, pedantic droning, his self appointed representation of the surrounding 'community', and the nauseating self righteousness Of his arguments, but I do strongly draw the line at the comment: "Parents of those students who are unable to gain admission to BYU will cease to see UVSC as a viable alternative." I now become saddened and outraged. HOW DARE YOU, SIR. This is an accredited College that graduates many students into viable, successful career paths, NOT a second choice, or a place to hang out until we *can get to a real school.' Thank you for so skillfully demeaning this school, and its students. You've just completely discredited yourself as any supporter of academia at UVSC. You are not my community, and even though I live five The ethics of free speech How academic freedom is realized seems to be a matter of mild to bitter dispute in college campuses across America. But the general concept itself is uniformly supported by most conservatives and liberals alike. Academic freedom is simply the idea that people should be free to explore and express controversial ideas, alongside generally accepted ideas. Most people support this concept because it is based on the American right to free speech. It's a concept we Americans pride ourselves on holding and defending throughout our nation's history while other countries, sadly, went the way of dictatorships, fascism, or monarchies. It is easy to conceive of free speech and also to practice it if one simple definition is kept in mind: Do not through the authority of the law ever seek to stop people from expressing themselves if they have no intent to harm. Those who wish to express themselves by physically attacking or endangering others obviously do not have a right to do so. They have stopped expressing and started coercing. If violence is the worst medium through which to exercise oppression and compulsory deed and thought it is not the only kind. Other types of force besides violence can be blocks away from the school, and am part of this community, I cannot remember electing you spokesperson. If you are interested in representing anyone beyond your own limited ideals and experience, then I suggest you run for office, but until you do, represent your own opinions so that the shallow thought placed behind your banal utterances has no other source of blame than beyond yourself. Or better yet, instead of campaigning for the 'community' moral minority, take all that free time that you have and contribute to the community. I hear that 'Habitat for Humanity' could always use your help, and maybe, just maybe, if your activism is demonstrated by your sweat and generosity, instead of your self-righteousness, people might not block you out like the telemarketing televangelist you seem to be. This is where the one simple guideline above - do not through the authority of the law ever seek to stop people from expressing themselves bears relevance again. Some people mistakenly feel it is okay to pass laws limiting people's free speech because their freedom to choose and express themselves is not being violently quelled. This is in gross error. Just because America does not execute or torture political protestors, in other words practice the violent forms of oppression, we should never be lulled into practicing lesser, but still unethical forms of oppression or censorship, such as, arresting, fining, jailing, etc. While it is in a voting majority's power sometimes to pass laws stifling minority dissent, this practice should be utterly shunned. The old adage is true: Might does not make right. What is legally enacted by the majority is not always ethical. Even when not violently enforced, limits on free speech enforced by law in any way are immoral because they directly contradict our ideal of freedom. If this is always kept in mind it should be easy to decipher what are appropriate and inappropriate means to counter someone else's personally offensive viewpoint.
