In 2004 the charity fund "Resurrection" purchased the old building wjth plans of turning it into a Social Integration center. This would provide everything from master-apprentice programs for ..young adults to a family adaptation program that will help social orphans live productively once they leave. Partnering with the Utah Russia Center and UVSC's Center for Service and Learning, 24 individuals made astounding personal sacrifices in order to serve the less fortunate. Among these were students and professors of multimedia and construction management. Phase one of the project began this May as the group stepped off the buses in Karavaevo. The group realized that many advanced construction techniques would have to be placed aside. Instead, the group's effort went into disposing garbage and hauling rocks and bricks by bucket from a nearby stream to the building site. Cement for the brick was mixed by hand, and they placed each brick one at a time without the aid of mixers or bulldozers. Help from the locals came in many forms. When a multimedia student's microphone stopped working, a local man located a replacement. The tools volunteers used also came from a local source. One of the major goals of the project was to incorporate local citizens so they could continue with the work. Kim Reynolds, a coordinator for the Center for Service and Learning, said, "Now that we've got the ball rolling, we want to make sure they can continue the work themselves.71 Working in these conditions helped volunteers view a different way of life. Mindy Trimm, the project manager for the multimedia side of the trip said, "I find that I no longer hold an interest for physical things like television and games. I No longer have a need for such things." The Center for Service and Learning is planning another trip for next year, to work on phase two of the project. The final stages are still unknown. "It's anyone's guess as to when it will be completed, we hope they [Russians] can stay there and continue on without us for now," Reynolds said. Students interested in this volunteer opportunity or other locally based projects should visit the Center for Service and Learning or contact Alexis Palmer in SC 101, or via phone, 863-8681.
