Show B4 MONDAY, OCTOBERS, 2007 Life • THE COLLEGE TIMES PUMPKINS fromBl tablishing the concert as epic. Corgan and crew played through a set of familiar songs, such as the forceful "Bullet With Butterfly " Wings" and "Zero," as well as new tracks like "That's The Way (My Love Is)" and "Doomsday Clock." About midway through the set, Schroeder and Reyes excused themselves, as the original members Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain piayed a few acoustic songs. The acoustic intermission included the song "Perfect" off of Adore with Chamberlain on tambourine. "This is my life partner Jimmy," Corgan said, introducing Chamberlain to the crowd, eliciting a few laughs from the crowd. He followed that up by playing "1979," which was pleasurable as a stripped-down acoustic tune. Making the song more meaningful, Corgan dedicated it to a mother whose daughter passed away recently. Toward the end of the show, the crowd roared with excitement when the Smashing Pumpkins started into the intro for "Today," the breakthrough hit from 1993's Siamese Dream. This song seemed to fit the emotion of most in the crowd for whom seeing their rock idols live and reunited made that day "the greatest day." Throughout the entire show, Corgan seemed cool and composed as the band delved into deeper, extended jams. Corgan's superb guitar skills shined, as he would burst into blazing solos. Occasionally, he would trade off, allowing Schroeder to take over the shredding as well. After the band said good night and went backstage, everyone knew there was more to come. The first encore was only a single song, "Cherub Rock." Then they departed again only to return for the second encore in which they played "Muzzle," from their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness double disc. Back on the music scene and as good as ever, Smashing Pumpkins proved they haven't lost it. In fact, they are better than ever; persevering time, lineup changes and much more-including the unfortunate passing of a fan at their show in Vancouver—that could turn many bands from the stage. Radiohead's new album a pot o' gold In Rainbows available online in abrupt haste Jack Waters Life writer W ithout a record label or retail price, critically acclaimed British rock band Radiohead will experiment with a new marketing strategy for their heavily anticipated seventh studio album, //; Rainbows. On Oct. 1, guitarist Jonny Greenwood casually announced via Radiohead's "Dead Air Space" blog. "Hello everyone. Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days. We've called it In Rainbows. Love from us all." Though in brevity, the statement created a buzz that may make this experiment a successful one for Radiohead. The band decided to let fans determine what price they want to pay for the digital download of the album. And it's perfectly acceptable to pay nothing besides the required $1 transaction fee. When In Rainbows' songs are placed in the online checkout basket, a question mark pops up where the price normally would be. Click it, and "It's up to you" appears. Click once more and it prompts the words "It's really up to you." It is a generous way to show their commitment to their fans by letting their audience decide the value of the music. In Rainbows will be available as a digital download beginning Oct. 10, only through the band's official website, www.radiohead.com. Alternatively, fans can decide to purchase the album as part of a deluxe box set for $80, which includes the album on CD. as well as two 12" vinyl records and various extras that fans will love such as extra songs, photographs and more. Not only does this strategy allow Radiohead to keep more profits (instead of paying a record label and retailers), it also allows them to keep control of their art. Without a record label, Radiohead owns complete distribution and artistic rights over their music. In Rainbows marks the first time a major album's price . is determined by what individual consumers want to pay for it. Radiohead should fare well using this type of strategy, as they are an established, admired band with fans whom have been waiting four years for a new album. Radiohead, likely the most popular band in the world without a record label, . hasn't released an album since 2003's Hail to the Thief. Radiohead's reputation and the size of their fanbase should propel the release of /// Rainbows to levels artistically unseen. HIKING from Bl first hydropower plants.
