Show B6 MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2007 Sports • THE COLLEGE TIMES HOCKEY from B5 help in bringing the program from zero to where it is now, and all parties involved deserve the credit for where the program is. Beaudry deserves the credit for going to Canada and Russia and convincing players to come to UVSC. It can't have been an easy task. The hockey team practices until midnight sometimes, no one is on scholarship, and most players have to have jobs mixed in with hockey and school. It's a demanding sport, but Beaudry has the players committed and willing to do what it takes to win. Only now, they need to start rolling out consistent Ws for it all to come together. Tournaments in New York and Colorado in October and November, respectively, will be better measuring sticks as to where the team is at compared to some of the country's best teams. Beaudry didn't use the obvious excuse that the team was brand new in his fi rst or second years, but you could tell. The goalie, inexperience, lack of dedication and trying to be something they were not, were all problems in the first year. In year two, Beaudry gotridof most of his problem players but didn't have a goalie that could consistently get the job done. That is expected to be different this year. The players talked about winning the regional tournament and making it lo nationals this year. It will be a big step, but it should he made. "That's our expectation and it is on our list of team goals." Beaudry said. SOCCER from B5 ard in its first game of a three-game road. Jenni Clough led the Wolverines with two goals and is now the school's all-time leading goal scorer with 15 in her career. Clough scored her first goal in the 66lh minute and added her third goal of the year three minutes later. Katey Turner, Lauren Bluth and Lauren Tuerpe also scored in the game. England has been on hard times after winning the 2003 Cup and Ireland hoped to make a case to be a real force on the world scene, but they lost predictably to France in pool play. What makes the Rugby World Cup exciting is not the top teams, but the performances of some of the lesser-known sides. Tonga beat arch-rival Samoa and also lost to the Springboks International Rugby Board by only five points to become the surprise team (esing New Zealand pecially considering that the — at least twice a big complaint of the team in year.
