Show orts The College Times MONDAY, OCTOBER I, 2007 Colorado Rapids at Real Salt Lake On track: Matt Beaudin Sports writer UVSC 9, Utah State 6 The hockey team beat Utah State for the first time, but it has bigger things in mind for this season. Ben Webster Sports editor The hockey team is doing something right. First off, you can't walk ten feet in the school without seeing a sign with the day and time of the next hockey game. They want fans and they are starting to get them. But what they want more than fans is wins, and they got a big one to open the season. Coach Matt Beaudry has taken the program from nothing, to contending with the best teams in the state in three years. The recent 96 win over Utah State was, in a way, a statement win for the three-year program. "I consider it to be pretty important," Beaudry said. "Some say that Utah State isn't as strong this year, but it doesn't matter. They are a well-coached team [...] this establishes us as a team to be reckoned with." David Wyman led the way with four goals in the game. Joey Bakosh added a pair of goals and Chris Fumes, Michael Daugulis and Jeff Jiron also scored. It was just one game out of a long season ahead, but the in past when the Aggies played the Wolverines, it wasn't pretty. This win was big because it showed Utah Valley could compete with teams in the state. But the win wasn't everything. Better teams pose better tests for Utah Valley this season. "We play tougher teams than Utah State this year. We need to keep this in perspective," Beaudry said. "We try to teach the team a positive cycle that success breeds confidence and confidence breeds success." Now we will see what Beaudry and the rest of the program can really do. Beaudry said he still has players who can develop and contribute; and, he said that other players will need to be brought in as the program continues to gain interest. The team had confidence going into the Utah State game and no doubt the confidence has risen after the win. The win over Utah State was nice, but what does it mean if this team struggles against other competition? What does that win mean if the team doesn't make it to the regional tournament this year? What does it mean if Utah State gets revenge and beats down the Wolverines in the other match ups this season? 'That won't fly," Beaudry said. It's a long, long hockey season and one win doesn't mean much as far as getting to where the team wants to go. There will be opportunities this year for more statement-making, theprogram-has-arrived wins. Beaudry has had lots of SeeHOCKEY.S6 Hockey I;;•-, '" '"•'. Game after game, Real Salt Lake plays with heart. Not because they're realistically in the playoff hunt and they need to win down the stretch, but because they don't want to be the worst team in Major League Soccer. Saturday night RSL took the field against the Colorado Rapids with hopes of separating themselves from the Los Angeles Galaxy, who currently are in last place in the Western Conference. On a rainsoaked night at Rice-Eccles Stadium, RSL found the net first in the 30th minute when a deflected shot was buried between the pipes off the foot of forward Kyle Brown for his second goal of the season. The lead would hold for Real, thanks to goalkeeper Nick Rimando, who leads the MLS in saves with 129 on the season, as they escaped with the 1-0 victory. "We have felt for a very long time that we have a deep squad," Head Coach Jason Kreis said. "Some of the proof was there tonight." The Rapids put the ball in the back of the net in the 69th minute, but an offside call nullified the goal to the relief of 14,089 RSL fans in attendance. Rimando finally squelched the furious second-half attack, with two saves back-to-back in the final minutes of the game. "Stellar, fantastic... saved another game for us," Kreis said of his goalie's effort. RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman, who previously played for the Rapids, was awarded the captains armband for the game. "It felt great," Beckerman said of the win. "Anytime we can get a win against Colorado, it's good for us." RSL is mathematically still alive for a 2007 playoff birth, although it looks grim. Prior to the win, RSL needed 11 points in the final five games to qualify. The rivals were also playing for the Rocky Mountain Cup. With the win, RSL was able to avoid losing the series with Colorado for the third strait year. Real Salt Lake has just three games remaining this season. Jason Adkins Sports writer If everything goes as expected, the All Blacks should be hoisting the William Webb Ellis Cup as the winners of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. To be fair, rugby pundits and fans alike have been saying that about New Zealand in every Rugby World Cup since they won the inaugural quadrennial tournament in 1987. Unfortunately, the All Blacks have failed at every attempt to gain a second title and not even making the finals since 1995-a 1512 loss in extra-time to the Springboks of South Africa. The 2007 edition of the Rugby World Cup is proving to be exciting as a few teams are emerging to challenge the All Blacks.
