THE COLLEGE TIMES News A 5 Career Fair Utah Valley State College 2007 Fall Internship and Career Fair sxc.hu Networking in model form Networking: a persons best friend Spencer Shell News editor The truth of the matter is, anyone desperate enough can get a job, but is fast food, cleaning or working at some minimum wage job necessary? For a college student, these may be a best option, with available hours or qualification. But In the future, a better job is a must, and those are not always the easiest to find. What steps need to be taken to be hired in a good job? While keeping an eye out for the dream job and hoping that the fates will turn, or looking around on job boards and the Internet for a position to open up may not be the worst strategies in the world, there is a better, and more effective way to get a job, and that is through networking. What exactly is networking? According to about.com 60 percent of people looking for a job find employment through networking. Say, for example, that you are talking to your friend about how you are trying to get a job as a circus clown, and it just happens that his sister's boyfriend's uncle's monkey is a performing artist in the local circus, and he has the connections you need to get the job. So you land the job, and it's basically as easy as that. Networking is developing a broad list of contacts through friends, roommates, peers, teachers, neighbors, co-workers, bosses, people you've met at socials, etc. Then using those contacts to your advantage when you are looking for a job. This means that being anti-social will work against you when trying to network. These people need to want to help you. They can help in a number of ways; it could be as simple as them giving you a lead on a job, advice for a particular field or company, introducing you to others in the field, or to those responsible for hiring. Talk to everyone. You never know who or what each person knows. You still need to be qualified, and have a good resume, but when it comes down to it, the right connections are worth their weight in gold.
