Jennie Nicholis Career counselors, job fair may help Justin Ritter News writer Students trying to pick a satisfying career have a useful resource at their fingertips—the UVSCcareer center. "Our services are designed to cater to the individual needs of those within our campus community, be it for those seeking for a parttime employment while in school or finding that perfect career," read a statement on the career center's website. Career counselor Gary Gardner said the career center provides counseling for students, as well as recruiting events, such as the upcoming career fair. Gardner said that students who are just starting out should talk with academic counselors and take proficiency tests to find where their strengths are in order to choose a major. Once their majors are chosen, students should talk with career counselors, who wjll help them decide on a career, he said. According to the career center website, "Career employment counselors are available to assist [students] in finding the best job possible to meet [their] needs." Counselors take factors such as students's interests and accomplishments into consideration when helping them find a rewarding career, Gardner said. Gardner also noted the career fair can be instrumental in helping students find satisfying careers. The career fair allows students to speak with potential employers, find internships and even interview with some of the businesses attending the fair. Students may also be able to find an enjoyable career through UV Job Board, Gardner said. The online job board is designed to help students find everything from part-time work to longterm jobs and careers, and can be found ad https://myinterfase.com/uvsc/student/ The careerfair will be held Oct. 4, held in the Grande Ballroom. Information sessions and interviews will continue through Oct. 18. For Men: Match your shoes and belt. Do not wear jewelry, except for a watch and ring. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a short-sleeved "dress" shirt. Shine your shoes. Never button the bottom button of your suit coat. For Women: Do not dress in revealing clothing. Avoid wearing trendy clothing or anything too flashy. Traditional styles are more fitting for interview settings. Wear simple patterns and colors. The same goes for hairstyles-wear your hair in a conservative way. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. Myths about interview attire include the benefit in wearing dark colors. Although dark colors are good in business settings, wearing only dark colors is not always ap- propriate. Don't be afraid to wear some color; it may be the thing that sets you apart from other applicants. Another myth is that one cannot dress in a way that includes personal style. Instead of trying to mask your style, try to incorporate it into your interview clothing, but in a subtle way, such as through color. Self-expression does not have to be dismissed just so you can get a job. Employers want to feel like they are hiring a person, riot a resume. Dressing appropriately will surely put you ahead of the game in the competitive job world. Showing up for an interview undepressed shows that you are under prepared. Do not fall victim to this easily preventable situation. Dress to impress and you will not go wrong.
