In need of defense When UVSC sank their teeth into Division II Mesa State in their final exhibition game, and lead 274 with over seven minutes remaining in the first half, I was ready to write that this team is ready for a more-than-challenging year. I was going to write that, despite not having a big guy in the middle, UVSC would be okay this year because of the multiple options they have from the outside. UVSC was on their way to another blowout preseason win. They beat Dixie State by 27 and they were on their way to another win of 20 plus. I know it was just going to be two Division II teams, but the Mavericks from Mesa State beat the Wolverines last year. But then, the Wolverines took their teeth out, lost the hunger and decided that they would coast defensively the rest of the way. Coasting just won't get it done though, no matter whom you play. The Mavericks, especially 6-7 forward Stephen Soriano, went off tearing into UVSC late in the first half. UVSC hung on most of the second half, but then they looked like they would end up winning pretty big. They built a 10-point lead late in the half but proceeded to lose it again. If it wasn't for David Heck's 32 points and a 3-pointer with no time left, UVSC could have lost this game. They say games aren't about the wins and losses during the preseason, but besides learning and improving, these guys definitely want victories. Heck said, "It gives you confidence when you win, and it makes fit. ; Chad Clark/NetXNews David Heck drives past a Dixie defender. He led UVSC with 17 and 32 points in two preseason games. Heck's heroics lead to victory points in the final minute, which tied the game at 82-82. Jack Jared Waters "Ever since you are little, you always think about hitting the game-winning shot," Heck said. "Ryan had the poise to look them off and find me wide open." Heck finished the game with 32 points and two blocked shots to pace UVSC in the action-packed matchup. Mesa State's 6'7* star Stephen Soriano matched the 32 points by Heck. "After we scored, we got another one right away and did not let them counter attack." The key to the win was UVSC out shooting Delaware State 18-5 and putting 12 shots on goal. Anderson did say that the team played well throughout the game and created chances to score. With the loss in the semifinals, the Wolverines end the season with an 8-11-1 record, dropping a little off their performance last year when they captured the United Soccer Conference championship. The team will lose eight players due to graduation and transfers, but several key players will be returning, including Wright and goalie TashaBell.
