It was then found that only 71 percent were buckled up, which is 17.5 percent below the Utah County seat belt use rate. In 2004, an unbelted crash occupant was killed in Utah every two days. Deaths and serious injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes could be reduced by 50 percent with proper and consistent use of safety belts. The second reason students reported for not buckling up was the short distances traveled, hence no seen need for seatbelts. However, three out of four crashes happen within 25 miles of your home, at speeds of 45 miles per hour or less. With so many students commuting to UVSC each day and the holiday season rapidly approaching, it is extremely important that UVSC students remember to "Buckle Up."
