Show /port/ Women set for 2006-2007 MONDAY • NOVEMBER 6 • 2006 From SEASON- B1 said. Utah Valley State College has just one senior, Veva Ahlstrom. They have also three juniors, seven sophomores and three freshmen. Last year's freshman phenom Robyn Fairbanks returns to lead the charge at center. Fairbanks, the 2005-2006 D-I Independent Newcomer of the Year, and Wolverine leading scorer (17.6) and rebounder (8.6), looks to continue her dominance. Fairbanks will be joined by her fellow bailers this season: Hollie Beaman, Sandy Marvin, Rebekah Peterson and Ashley Grimm. Going into their third Division-I season, the lady Wolverines hope to build on their success from last year and take it to a new level. "We have the big goal of building a respectable D-I program that will compete with the bigger schools and represent our school and community well," Coach Nixon said. "Obviously our goal is to win. We want to win games, and it's important that we do this in our transition of becoming a Division-I athletic program." Coach Nixon put out this" challenge, "If you like to watch athletes that work hard, play together and have fun then you'll appreciate UVSCs women's basketball, because that is the type of product we put out there. This is my challenge for everyone, to come and watch us play. Because if you do, you'll see something that you like." More important things to do From LOVE -B1 baskets, goals and other scores all the time. Every game can be different, but we have seen it before. The Broncos loss was a perfect example. In sports, rarely do we see something that has never been done before or something that won't be done again. But people flock to spoiling events to watch other people play a game. We pay good money to be there in person to watch games. We complain when gas prices are raised, but when it comes to sporting events, we gladly empty our wallets. Why do we do this? It seems crazy to me, and I do it. I love sports more than the average guy or girl. Somehow, I feel connected to a bunch of people I have never met. Regard- less of whether they are good citizens or creeps, my emotions are determined by what they do on a playing field. I, even as a fan, find this incredible and often wonder why I do it. Why does it make me feel this way? 1 don't get it. This is my explanantion though. I grew up with six brothers and there is no doubt that they played a part in my growing up to love sports. Maybe it's tradition. Maybe I feel a need to belong to my brotherhood. Maybe because I am such a competitive person I love to see others compete. I love competition and I hate to lose. But that is another problem with being a fan of sports-losing is inevitable. It happens to every team, every person on every team. The lows are so low and the highs are so short-lived. Obviously competition, teamwork, physical health and goal making are important aspects of sports. Bui how much of that goes into watching a game on your couch while throwing back some sort of beverage that isn't good for your health? Maybe it is simply an escape. With all the stress and problems that there are, we can sit down and forget about our problems and just watch and be entertained. Just as I said, the Colts drove easily on the Broncos tough defense and Adam Vinitari nailed a game-winning field goal from 37 yards out with two seconds left. I knew what would happen but before I convince myself to stop living and dying with the next game, I will end. f 6 credit hours, 3.700 acres --«6©II 0a&$419 thru Nov. 13 ll^",'Good ney^^r'casirhSLrapped snow rats like you^S;-"'' ^ has some of the most - ;?feisane preseason prices.
