Keyra Kristoffersen W oxco/toncfl/accuracy/fn tagrlty Jared Magill College Times If you are wondering what you are going to do to avoid cabin fever in the coming winter months, the Outdoor Education department may be the optimal place to search for answers. Whether you are a winter sports buff or a snowbird that flocks south following the sun's radiant warmth, the Outdoor Education department has activities suited to meet almost any taste in the colder months of the year. From simple out and back day trips to week long adventures, the foLks at outdoor ed are sure to at least point you in the right direction toward winter fun. Some of their simpler outings include activities such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing and snowboarding, in some of the best locations on the Wasatch front. Outdoor Education Coordinator Kim Reynolds said that they even sometimes these jaunts are made a little more adventurous by holding them at night under the light of the full moon. Out and back trips like these happen at least once a month, and if you don't own the gear, most of it is provided and included in the cost of the trip. Equipment not included can be found either for sale or rent at the Outdoor Education Adventure Resource Center located in SC 103H, at very reasonable prices. If you are worried that ice and snow will make your hair goflatand your skin all ashy, that down parkas and snow pants will make you look fat, you could take a trip to the Baja Peninsula in December. The Baja trip, which leaves on Dec. 15 and returns on Dec. 23, entails a week of sea kayaking in a place called Bahia de Los Angeles, or Bay of the Angels. The bay is distinguished for being one of the most remote and beautiful bays in Mexico. It is protected from the ocean's waves by an island called Isla de la Angel de la Guardia, or Guardian Angel Island, which makes the waters of the bay calm and peaceful. "It's the off season down there, but the whether is in the 80s," said Reynolds, "We do all of our Christmas shopping in Mexico." Some of the upcoming activities being sponsored by outdoor ed include an avalanche awareness clinic on Jan. 18, 7 p.m. on Centre Stage; a snowshoe demo day held at the Sundance Nordic Center in Provo canyon on Feb. 3; or, for those who may not have the time for adventure during the school year or just like high adrenaline and cultural films, there is the Banff Mountain Film Festival held in the Ragan Theater on Feb. 13-14. The Outdoor Education Adventure Resource Center also sells discounted season and day passes to both The Canyons and Sundance resorts.
